Canned Air
I'm sure you've all heard us talk about canned air before in some of our tips. We use it here quite often and I'm willing to bet that a lot of you use it too. But, for those who don't know, what is canned air? Well, it's basically air that is sold in a pressurized can that is used to clean out dust, dirt and any other grime that may exist in hard to reach places. It's mostly used on sensitive electronic devices, including the insides of computers and between keyboard keys.
Canned air comes with a long nozzle that shoots out a blast of air, which blows out all of the debris found in tight areas. A good rule of thumb is to use canned air whenever you have a spot to clean that a vacuum or a piece of cloth cannot reach. Now, the air used for canned air is not the same as the air we all breathe. The mixture is often made up of nitrogen and other harmless gases. It is also known to be ozone safe, which is always good.
Now, even though canned air is safe to use on your computer, etc., you do need to pay attention to the kind you buy. A wonderful WorldStart reader informed me that there are two types of canned air: flammable and non-flammable. The can will clearly say whether it's flammable or not, so make sure you read the label closely. If a certain propellant in the canned air mixes with a high voltage from your computer, it could cause flames. So, even if you think air is non-flammable, don't be so sure. Read the label and just be as careful as possible when working with canned air. It's better to be safe than sorry. At least that's what I always say!

Deleting IE 7 Cookies
Lately, several of you have been asking about deleting cookies in Windows Vista and while that's a valid question, I think we all may be a little confused about this whole thing. For starters, cookies don't really lie within your operating system, rather they come from your Web browser. So, even if you're using the operating system of Vista, your cookies are still stored in whichever browser you use, such as Internet Explorer or Firefox. (Also, just to make sure we're all on the same page here, if you're not familiar with cookies, you can read all about them here). Okay, with all that taken care of, let's continue!
From all of your questions about cookies in Vista, I've come to the conclusion that you're really asking about cookies in Internet Explorer 7. Vista comes with IE 7 as the default Web browser, so if you're new to using that, let's go over how you can delete cookies from there. To begin, go to Start, Control Panel and double click on the Internet Options icon to open the Internet Properties box. (You need to be in the classic view for this to work. To get there, just click on the Classic View link on the left hand side of the Control Panel window).
Once you're there, look for the Browsing History section and hit the Delete button. Another window with several options will then come up for you. Click on the Delete Cookies button to get rid of all your stored cookie files. You will then be asked if you're sure you want to delete your cookies, so when you're ready, just hit Yes. Next, hit the Close button and then the OK button to close everything out. That's all you have to do. All of your cookies will be gone for good (that is, until you make new ones!) Either way, this is a good thing to do on a regular basis, just to make sure the information you put on the Internet is kept as safe as possible!

Q:
I want to go through and remove some of the programs I know I have on my computer, but when I go to my Add/Remove Programs list, I can't find them. How can I get rid of them?
A:
That isn't uncommon. Some programs just like to be a little stubborn. Most Windows components can be uninstalled by going to the Add/Remove Windows Components section in the Control Panel. But, what about the ones you can't find? You know they're on your computer somewhere, but how can you get rid of them if you can't find them? Well, it's actually not too hard to bring these out of their hiding. Let's learn how!
Bring up the Windows Explorer (one way to do this is to right click on the Start button and select Explore).
Find your way to C:\Windows\Inf. (Double click on the My Computer icon on your desktop, double click on the C: drive and then go from there).
Make a copy of the "Sysoc.inf" file. (Click the file and hit Ctrl + C then Ctrl + V).
Next, right click "Sysoc.inf" and choose Open with, then Notepad.

Type Ctrl + H to bring up the Replace box.
Replace ,hide, (comma hide comma) with ,, (comma comma).
Then hit the Replace All button.

Save the file.
Now, when you go to Start, Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs, Add/Remove Windows Components, you will see stuff that wasn't there before. Some of the items will be in subfolders, like "Games," which is under "Accessories." Double click to open any folder. Just uncheck the items you want to remove. There you have it. No more hidden programs!

Q:
I just bought a new printer, but before I install it, do I need to remove my old one first? Please help!
A:
Back by popular demand! Here's a quick one for you, but it's very helpful as well. Listen up!
The simple answer is "No." All of the Windows operating systems support multiple printers, so you can install your brand new printer without having to remove the old one.
Now, if you really want to get rid of the old one and start fresh, you can do so by going to Start, Control Panel and choosing Printers and Other Hardware. From there, click on Printers and Faxes. (For versions older than Windows XP, go to Start, Settings, Printers). Once there, a screen with all of your printers will open. Find the one you want to get rid of, right click it and select Delete from the resulting menu. That's all you have to do!
An Extra Note: If you have multiple printers installed on your computer and your Windows isn't using the one you want as the default printer, don't stress out! To change your default printer, just right click on the one you want to be your default and select Set as Default from the resulting menu. There you have it!
It's almost too easy, huh? Now, go on and enjoy your newly installed printer!

Get a New One
So, you know about Ctrl + N in MS Word, right? It gives you a new blank document based on the Normal template.
Also, in Excel, Ctrl + N gives you a new blank workbook.
It seems like, in the MS Office Suite, Ctrl + N is all about a "new one," but what does Ctrl + N give you in MS Outlook?
After all, just in case you haven't noticed, there's a ton of stuff included in Outlook.
It has the usual e-mail, but it also has task lists, sticky notes, a calendar, a journal, contacts, etc.
So, the question must be asked: "What exactly will Ctrl + N do in a program that has so much?"
The answer is really quite simple.
Ctrl + N will give you a new item for whatever part of the program that's currently active.
For example, if you're in your e-mail and you hit Ctrl + N, you'll get a new e-mail.
In the Notes section, you'll get a brand new note ready for your input and in the calendar area, you'll get a new appointment.
I'm sure you get the idea!
Ctrl + N: The multi-purpose keyboard command!

Pictures in Line With Text?
Have you ever noticed that when you insert a picture into MS Word, the program automatically puts it in line with the text? You know, like this:
I don't know about you, but most of the time, I prefer the text to wrap around the picture and really integrate it into the document. Something more like this:
To make that happen, I usually have to go through and change the formatting for each picture. What a pain! I mean, if I'm always going to change the picture formatting, wouldn't it make more sense to have Word format the picture to my preferences from the get go?
Yeah, I agree. So, that's what I have for you today!
To change the way Word formats a picture upon insertion, you'll need to go to the Options dialogue window.
For older versions of Word, go to the Tools menu, Options choice.
Once you're in the Options dialogue window, you need the Edit tab.
You're now looking for the "Insert/paste picture as" field. Use the arrow to pull down the list and choose the formatting you prefer.
For Word 2007, you need the Office Button, Word Options button.
In the Options dialogue window, you need the Advanced options, "Cut, copy and paste" section.
You're also looking for the "Insert/paste picture as" field. Use the arrow to pull down the list and choose the formatting you prefer.
When you're all finished, click OK.
That's it!
The next time you insert a picture, you should find that it's automatically formatted to meet your standards from the very beginning. It just doesn't get any better than that!

Hyperlink Mystery
Have you ever had trouble opening a new link from your e-mail or even on a Web site? When you click on the link, just basically, nothing happens? Well, I'm here today to help you with that!
I've gotten several e-mails recently about this very problem, so I'm glad you asked. This seems to be a somewhat common problem, so I did a little research on it, in hopes of finding a quick fix for you all! Fortunately, I found a few things that could be causing this to happen.
To refresh, basically the problem is that whenever you're using your e-mail program or an instant messenger type program (or any other application) and a link is included, you click on it, but nothing happens. Your computer may freeze up for just a second, but when it's done, you're left right where you started from. Your browser will not open and you cannot, for the life of you, get a new window to come up from the link. How annoying is that?!
Like I said before, there are a few things you can try to resolve this problem. Before we go any deeper, the first thing to check is your popup blocker. If you have a pop up stopper installed on your computer, it could be interfering with the links you are trying to open. If this happens to be the case, you can always hit the Ctrl button and click on the link again. Ctrl + a click allows the link to open. If that was your problem, you are very lucky.
Another simple cause could be that you don't have the correct browser set as the default for your computer. If you use Internet Explorer, you have to make sure it is set as your default browser. To check this, open IE and go to Tools, Internet Options. Click on the Programs tab and make sure the box clear down at the bottom that says "Internet Explorer should check to see whether it is the default browser" is checked. This will allow IE to open any links you click on. If you use Firefox, go to Tools, Options and choose the General tab. Make sure the box that says "Firefox should check to see if it is the default browser when starting" is checked.
If those two things still don't fix the link problem, there are a couple more options you can try. We need to check and make sure your folder options are set to your specific browser. Go to Start, Control Panel and make sure it is in the classic view. Once there, click on the Folder Options icon and choose the File Types tab. Now, you're going to look for the item "(NONE) URL: HyperText Transfer Protocol." Highlight that and click on the Advanced button, then the Edit button. This will bring up some information on your browser. You're mainly going to be looking at the Application line. If you use Internet Explorer, make sure it says IExplore and so on (for whichever browser you use). If you've recently switched browsers, you may still have your old settings in there and that could be causing the problem with the links. You just have to make sure you have the right browser selected so the links will open in the correct way.
Okay, there's one more tip for you in case nothing has worked thus far. Go to Start, Run and type in "regsvr32 urlmon.dll" (without the quotes). Click OK when done and if a message pops up that says "DllRegisterServer in urlmom.dll succeeded," the problem should be fixed. If that still doesn't work, try typing in the following commands in the Run box:
- Shdocvw.dll
- Msjava.dll
- Actxprxy.dll
- Oleaut32.dll
- Mshtml.dll
- Browseui.dll
- Shell32.dll
One of these options should solve the link problem you are experiencing and you can enjoy link freedom once again!

Keep It Regular
Yep, here it is again. I like to keep this tip on a constant rotation, because I think it's filled with tons of great information for any computer user. So, here it is once again. Take it or leave it!
I know you've heard over and over again the things you should do or actions you should take to keep your computer safe and secure. And while all that's great, isn't it a little hard to remember all those things on a day to day or a month to month basis? Wouldn't it be nice to just have a list to print out to remind you when those things need to be done?
Well, wait no longer. Below is a list of some of the things I thought of that everyone should do on a regular basis. These are things I do to my own computer as well, because it's just that important!
Okay, to get started, one of the more obvious practices is that you should run an antivirus scan at least biweekly, if not every week. Now, I use the Norton antivirus software, but there are several options out there, with most of them working in a similar way. Most programs will allow you to set up a time for the scan to run, so you don't have to worry about running it manually each time. If you want it to run at 4:00 on Friday afternoon, it will just automatically do that for you, with no hassle. The antivirus programs also have certain boxes that you should keep checked in case of a problem. For example, in Norton, you can choose to have the Auto-Protect on all the time, as well as, have it start automatically every time Windows starts up. In Norton, you also have options to go through on how you would like an infected file to be taken care of. You can choose to have it repaired, have it quarantined if the repair failed or deny any access to the file itself. These are just a few of the choices you get along with an antivirus scan. Just take some time to browse through the Options menu in the antivirus software you use and you'll be all set.
Along with the above tip, you should also run your Live Update scan regularly. That way, you won't miss any of the updates the program has to offer. I, for one, run my Live Update each morning before I check my e-mail here at the office. It only takes a few minutes and it's just a simple way of ensuring that the computer is safe before all those junk e-mails come rollin' through.
Next, another smart thing to have on your computer is an adware/spyware program. This isn't as serious as virus protection, but it is very important. Programs such as SpyWare Killer or Acronis are good starts to this protection option. There are also programs such as SpyBot or AdAware out there to help keep you safe. You should also consider getting some sort of a firewall program like ZoneAlarm.
Now, on to some more! There are several things you can do to your computer to clean up space. For one, you should run a disk cleanup pretty regularly to make sure nothing is eating away at your space. To do this, click on the My Computer icon on your desktop and look for the C: drive. Right-click on that and choose Properties. This will bring up a pie chart of how much space is being used and how much you have left. It has all kinds of information there for you regarding your disk space, so you can check and make sure you have the appropriate amount of disk space left. Just click on the Disk Cleanup button and let it run. You may be amazed at how much stuff that will remove from your computer. It may all be unnecessary stuff that you didn't even know was infested on your PC!
I actually had a problem with this awhile back. It may have been something some of you have faced before too. I kept getting a little pop up box down in the bottom right hand corner of my screen that said something like "You are running on an extreme low amount of disk space. Please remove items, etc." I didn't understand, because all I had on my laptop were some school files and things like that. There was nothing major and definitely nothing that could take up that much space. I went to the Disk Cleanup spot several times and no matter how much stuff was removed from my computer, the warning bubble kept popping up. I finally found out that I was somehow using around 48 GB of space and I only have a total of 52.3! I was just floored. There was no way I was using that much space. So, I took my PC to a friend and he was able to get all the unnecessary files off and now I'm only using 7.37 GB and I have 44.9 GB of space left. What a change, huh? There was some sort of program that was multiplying itself and it was just eating up all of my space. So anyway, the moral of the story is to check your disk space regularly to make sure something like this isn't getting ahold of all your space.
Another thing you can do to clean up some space is go through your Add/Remove programs (Start, Control Panel) and clean up some of the unwanted items in there. There always seems to be some sort of program or attachment that you don't need, so you might as well get rid of it and use the space for something else, right? The Add/Remove list also tells you when you last used a program, so it's easy to tell if you should get rid of it or not. If you haven't used it in the last month or so, I say, "Get it outta there!"
You should also go through all your files (I know, that may take awhile) and clean some stuff out of those too. I know there's several things on my computer that I don't need anymore, like school papers I had written, some pictures and even some music files. That sort of stuff is safe to delete off your computer, if you're sure you're never going to need it again. It will just free up some space for you and help your computer run more smoothly. You don't have to do this weekly or anything, but every two or three months may not be a bad idea. You can also help your PC by deleting old e-mails completely off your system. If you're never going to read them again, why waste the space? Getting rid of all those forwards you get and things like that will help your e-mail program and your system work better. Make sure you delete them from your deleted folder as well, not just from your Inbox.
There are just a couple more things you can do to keep your computer safe, secure and running smooth! If you surf the Internet a lot, clean out your Web browser history often and delete your cookies and files. This task is simple. Just go to your Web browser, click on Tools, Internet Options and under Temporary Internet Files, click Delete Cookies and Delete Files. Then under History, click on Clear History. This gets rid of the history of all the Web pages you've visited and all that comes with those. It's a good idea to do this every so often.
You can also clear up unused icons on your desktop. I know I used to have tons of icons sitting on my desktop that I never used. I never knew how annoying it was until I cleaned mine up and now I just have one row of icons and that's it. I can see that picture of my dogs that I have as my wallpaper much better now! You can put all of these unused icons into their own folder or you can just delete them for good. That's up to you! Either way, it's a good thing to do.
One last thing! It's also a good idea to empty out your Recycle Bin when you get a chance. After you've deleted all this stuff from your PC, you'll want to make sure it's gone permanently by deleting it out of your Recycle Bin. Just find the Recycle Bin icon on your desktop, right click on it and choose Empty Recycle Bin. It will throw away all that junk for you!
Well, there ya go. These are just a few practices you can do to keep your PC up and running as well as possible. You don't want it bogged down with all that junk, so help it out and clean it up. It will serve you better too!

Halloween Hangman
Today, let’s take a break from all the Halloween preparations, all the costume making and the party planning. Instead, let's play a game! This game has sound, so you may not want to play it at work (or at least turn those speakers off!)
It’s a game of Hangman with a mouthy skeleton as the hanged man. Guess the letters and for each one you get right, you score points. For each one you get wrong, another part of the skeleton’s body gets added to the hangman’s noose.
The words in the puzzle revolve around a Halloween theme, so that should help you with your guesses. If you guess the first word right, you get to continue. If not, start over and try again.
If you get on a roll, you can really rack up the points as your score continues to grow with each word you get right. My highest score was 130, with Vampire Bat as the word. I think the scoring really depends on how long the word is.
Are you ready to take on this spooky version of Hangman? Go for it!

The History of Halloween
Welcome to the History of Halloween. Every year, tons of kids around the USA dress up in costumes and go trick or treating, but what’s the real history behind this holiday?
Well, if you're interested, you’ve come to the right place. You’ll find navigation on the side menu. The sections are Holiday Origins, Creepy Videos Clips, The Great Pumpkin, Ghost Stories, Around the World, Historic Haunts, Halloween Treats, Jack-O-Lantern Cut Outs, Fast Facts and Boo-ography.
Holiday Origins – Here you can learn all about the origins of Halloween, from ancient times to modern day. Also, read about the evolution of Halloween as a holiday.
Creepy Video Clips – Check out these video clips about ghost stories and folklore. Choose a video from the left hand menu and it will play in the center video pane. Learn about the ghost Lavender and Barnsley Gardens if you dare! You can even find out about some of the ghosts haunting the Wild, Wild West.
The Great Pumpkin – Here you can learn all about pumpkins and how the Jack-O-Lantern came to be!
Ghost Stories – Here you will find three ghost stories that may be based in fact, but are most certainly interesting to read.
Around the World – Here you can see how Halloween is celebrated around the world and learn about the two related holidays: Guy Fawkes Day and El Dia de Los Muertos (The Day of the Dead).
Historic Haunts – This section centers on the haunting of presidents and of the White House itself. It was pretty interesting. I’d never heard of any of these stories before.
Halloween Treats – Here you can find some recipes for Halloween treats. There are cupcakes, cookies and even icing.
Jack-O-Lantern Cut Outs – Here you can find two Jack-O-Lantern Templates that you can use on your pumpkins for easier carving. If you click them, they enlarge and you can print them out too. (They are .PDF files, so if you need a PDF reader, go here).
Fast Facts – Here you can find a lot of fast facts about Halloween. They're just like little blurbs really, but there were some interesting ones, like how many pounds of pumpkins were produced per state.
Boo-ography – And last, but not least, this is really its own site. It will pop open in a new window. Here you can find spooky biographies, celebrities who were born or died on Halloween, Halloween origins and even another section called Halloween Around the World. This was by far my favorite part of this visit!

Undine Falls Yeah, strange name, but good falls! I'd like to say I had to hike 12 miles into the backcountry to get this shot, but this was taken probably about 10 yards from the parking lot. Worth the quick stop!

Lamar Valley Trees I took this a couple weeks ago in Yellowstone. The trees looked too good to pass up!

Antelope on the Lookout This guy was busy chasing around a couple girls, so he wasn't too concerned about me. I was able to get pretty close and he was fun to watch. That's for sure! |
