Although a small victory was achieved, the struggle for Vieques is far
from over. So long as a single U.S. military personnel is in Puerto
Rico, the oppressive yoke of U.S. colonialism will make its presence
felt.

And now, those who are responsible for the cancer and destruction that
took place for more than six decades, want to implement a policy of
reprisals on the people of Vieques. The FBI have arrested people who
have been active in the noble struggle to get the U.S. Navy to stop
its bombing destruction and withdraw from the island.

It was in Vieques where all U.S. wars since World War II, including
the invasion and conquest of Afganistan and Iraq, have been rehearsed.

Of the people of Vieques who were arrested, some have been charged
with conspiracy to destroy governemnt property, a potentially serious
charge. We have to make it clear - the real destructive criminal is
U.S. colonialism in Puerto Rico. From the U.S. Navy, the FBI to U.S.
officials in Washington, they are all responsible for the
destructiveness in Vieques and all of Puerto Rico.

Please join us in an emergency picket Monday, June 30th, 4:30 P.M., at
26 Federal Plaza to support of the people of Vieques, Puerto Rico. DO
NOT let Vieques become the scene of FBI reprisals.

FBI arrest Vieques leader, Nilda Medina

Shortly before 5AM today, five agents of the FBI
entered the home of Nilda Medina and Robert
Rabin, members of the Committee for the Rescue
and Development of Vieques (CRDV) with a warrant
to arrest Medina, acusing her of violation of Title 18
of the Federal Code for "damage to property''.

Teodoro Lebron was the agent in charge of the
operation that included members of the Puerto
Rican police.  The arrest order was signed by
Magistrate Aida Delgado and Special Agent of
the FBI, Carlos Rodríguez.

Members of the CRDV and the Vieques
community denounced the arresta as an abuse
against a woman who has been a example of
this struggle for peace and made great efforts
over the past four years to maintain the non violent
nature of the struggle that gained the respect of
people  throughout the world.

This arrest comes just four days after FBI agents
entered the facilities of the CRDV in the
Peace and Justice Camp, with a search warrant
to find "maps, photos, phone and address lists
or other materials as evidence of the commission
a crime."

Nilda Medina is recognized as one of the principal
leaders of the Vieques struggle during more than
two decades and is a founding member of the
CRDV.

During actions of civil disobedience, Medina was
arrested on May 4th, 2000 and again in June of
that year when she participated in the first brigade
to return to the bombing zone after the "removal''
of the Civil Disobedience Camps from the military
area.

Spokespersons for the CRDV also denounce
the arrest of others in Vieques and in the main
island that could take place today and emphasized
that the group continues its plan to hold a People's
Assembly this Thursday at 7PM in the Count Mirasol
Fort on Vieques to discuss strategies for this new
phase of the struggle for decontamination, return of
the lands to the people and sustainable development.

Siento que tuvimos que borrar este mensaje por la posibilidad de que

Repudian entrada de FBI en Campamento de Justicia y Paz

El Comité Pro Rescate y Desarrollo de Vieques (CPRDV) denuncia actos
recientes de represión y persecusión contra su organización por
agentes del Buró Federal de Investigación (FBI). En la noche del
viernes, 20 de junio, agentes federales irrumpieron en las facilidades
del Campamento Justicia y Paz, centro de operaciones del grupo
comunitario. Los federales dejaron una Orden de Cateo del Tribunal
Federal en Puerto Rico con número de caso 256M, fechada 19 de junio de
2003 y firmada por la Magistrada Aida Delgado. El documento se
encontró en el piso del Albergue Justicia y Paz junto a un recibo del
FBI que indica que la "propiedad apropiada" es un mapa grande de
satélite de la isla de Vieques.

El agente federal, Amado Vega firmó el afidavit ante la magistrada, en
el cual sugiere que se estaba escondiendo en el CJP "... un mapa de
Vieques, documentos tales como fotos, libretas de direcciones y
teléfonos y otras propiedades que consituyen evidencia de un crimen."

El albergue, ubicado detrás de la oficina del Comité, se usó
extensamente durante estos pasados cuatro años para hospedar a los
desobedientes civiles y otros participantes en la lucha contra la
presencia militar, celebrar talleres de acción no-violenta, reuniones
comunitarias, recibir grupos solidarios y como almacén de equipo y
materiales del CPRDV.

Miembros del CPRDV denuncian este atropello como parte de una campaña
de las agencias militares-policiacas de intentar criminalizar una
lucha que durante cuatro años de grandes sacrificios ganó el respeto
del mundo por su carácter no violento. Durante varias semanas, agentes
del FBI han estado hostigando a miembros de la comunidad en relación a
la destrucción de propiedad de la Marina el primero de mayo. Han
visitado a varios hogares y se han visto en sus vehículos estacionados
frente a ciertas residencias para observar y tomar notas. Esta
situación provoca un estado de nerviosismo y preocupación y violenta
la paz de nuestra comunidad.

El CPRDV se ha destacado como la principal organizción viequense que
durante más de una década en la lucha por lograr el cese de las
actividades y la presencia militar. Muchos de sus integrantes han
dirigido brigadas de desobedientes y han sido arrestados y
encarcelados. El grupo ha desarrollado una impresionante red de
solidaridad en Puerto Rico, en EU y a nivel internacional que ayudó a
presionar al gobierno federal a terminar las prácticas bélicas aquí. Y
en esta nueva etapa, el CPRDV se dedica a la organización y
movilización comunitaria para presionarle a las agencias de gobierno –
de Puerto Rico y federales – para una limpieza ambiental total, la
devolución de todas las tierras al pueblo y un desarrollo sustentable
en manos de la comunidad viequense.

"Es por estas razones", señalan portavoces del grupo, "que el FBI
desata este proceso de represión contra nuestra organización." Sin
embargo, manifiestan los dirigentes de la lucha viequense, "ni con
balas, ni con cárceles ni con la represión del FBI podrán parar el
avance de este pueblo que lucha por la paz y por su dignidad."

L@s... viequenses y sus abogados se mantienen en alerta ante la
posibilidad de más represión de las agencias federales. Poco después
del pasado primero de mayo, el CPRDV comenzó una campaña educativa en
el pueblo sobre los derechos de la ciudadanía ante una visita del FBI
y exhorta a las personas que han sido visitadas por los agentes
federales a comunicarse para coordinar el apoyo legal necesario.

Viequenses denounce FBI intrusion into Peace and Justice Camp

The Committee for the Rescue and Development of Vieques (CRDV)
denounces recent acts of repression and persecution against the
organization by agents of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. On
Friday night, 20 June, federal agents entered the facilities of the
Peace and Justice Camp (PJC), center of operations of the community
group. The agents left a Search Warrant from the Federal Court in
Puerto Rico, with case number 256M, dated 19 June, 2003 and signed by
Magistrate Aida Delgado. The document was found on the floor of the
Peace and Justice Shelter, together with a receipt from the FBI
indicating the property seized was a large satellite map of Vieques.

Federal agent, Amado Vega signed the affidavit before the magistrate
in which he suggests that in the PJC there is "concealed...a Vieques
map, documents such as photos, pictures, address and phone books and
any other property that consitutes evidence of the commission of a
criminal offense."

The shelter, located behind the Committee's office, was used
extensively during the past four years to house civil disobedients and
other participants in the struggle against the military presence, to
hold workshops on non violent actions, community meetings, receive
solidarity groups and as storage space for the CRDV.

Members of the CRDV denounce this attack as part of a campaign by
military-police agencies who seek to criminalize a struggle that
during four years of great sacrifices gained the respect of people
throughout the world due to its non violent nature. During several
weeks, FBI agents have been pressuring members of the community
suspected of participating or knowing about the destruction of Navy
property on May first. Agents have visited several residences and have
been seen parked in cars in front of homes to observe and take notes.
This situation provokes a state of nervousness and worry and violates
the peace of our community.

The CRDV stands out as the principal Viequense organization that for
more than a decade has struggled for the cessation of miltary
activities and presence. Many of its members have led civil
disobedience brigades and have been arrested and jailed. The group
build an impressive network of solidarity in Puerto Rico, the US and
internationally that helped pressure the federal government to end
military practices here. And in this new phase, the CRDV works on
community organization and mobilization to pressure government
agencies – both in Puerto Rico and federal – for a total environmental
clean up, the return of all lands to the people and for sustainable
development in the hands of the Vieques community.

"This is why", say spokespersons for the group, "the FBI unleashes
this process of repression against our organization." However, the
Vieques leaders say, "neither bullets nor jails nor the repression of
the FBI can detain the advance of our people who struggle for peace
and in defense of our dignity."

The Viequenses and their lawyers are on alert in case of more
repression by federal agencies. Shortly after May first, the CRDV
began an educational campaign here about citizens' rights during a
visit by the FBI and urges persons who have been visited by federal
agents to contact the committee to help coordinate any necessary legal
support.

MÉXICO RECUERDA AL CARDENAL POSADAS A DIEZ AÑOS DE SU ASESINATO

Guadalajara, JUN 18 (AICA): La Iglesia católica en México recordó al
cardenal Juan Jesús Posadas Ocampo, arzobispo de Guadalajara,
asesinado el 24 de mayo de 1993. Su sucesor, el cardenal Juan
Sandoval Iñiguez, aseguró que la sangre del cardenal Posadas,
derramada inocentemente por cumplir su deber, no será inútil.

         Durante la celebración eucarística de la catedral podían
leerse pancartas con mensajes como éstos: "Los jóvenes de Jalisco
apoyamos al cardenal", "Pedimos justicia para el caso Posadas
Ocampo", "¿A quién perdonamos?"...

         Ante cientos de fieles que acudieron a la misa, el purpurado
reconoció que desde hace diez años "estamos sedientos de verdad y
justicia", en referencia al esclarecimiento del asesinato del
cardenal, ocurrido en el aeropuerto local.

         "Me uno a mucha gente que es maltratada y calumniada y
violentada y que espera justicia y nunca la encuentra, mucha gente se
acerca a mí porque ha padecido de injusticias y acude a la autoridad
y el resultado son sólo burlas, la justicia nunca llega", expresó.

         Por otra parte el obispo de Tabasco, monseñor Benjamín
Castillo, en declaraciones públicas, confesó su decepción, pues  –
según él–  las autoridades carecen de voluntad para esclarecer el
crimen del cardenal Posadas Ocampo.

         El prelado considera que el asesinato del cardenal no fue un
complot, pero nadie responde a los interrogantes. Dijo que pasarán
muchos años sin que se esclarezca el caso, hasta que se terminen los
compadrazgos y los compromisos. Monseñor Castillo, que siguió de
cerca todo el proceso, espera una investigación "más seria" por parte
de la Procuraduría General de la República.

Grave acusación del cardenal Sandoval

         El arzobispo de Guadalajara, cardenal Juan Sandoval, acusó al
ex Procurador General de México, Jorge Carpizo McGregor, de ser uno
de los autores intelectuales del crimen de su antecesor, el cardenal
Juan Jesús Posadas Ocampo, cometido hace una década.

         En una entrevista con la emisora “W Radio”, el cardenal=

Sandoval denunció que Carpizo no sólo encubrió el asesinato del
cardenal Posadas, sino también participó en él. El ex fiscal “fue uno=

de los operadores intelectuales del asesinato a quien encomendaron
encubrir el crimen”, afirmó el Purpurado.

         “Hay una serie de cosas que lo hacen a él cómplice de
encubrimiento pero también tuvo parte en el asesinato”, agregó el
Arzobispo y explicó que Carpizo ocultó pruebas y sustrajo
declaraciones y evidencias de los expedientes.

         El ex fiscal argumentó que las acusaciones en su contra
son “calumnias” y constituyen una reacción a la denuncia que
interpuso contra el cardenal Sandoval acusándolo de “tener vínculos
con narcotraficantes”.

         Por su parte, el diputado Fernando Guzmán Pérez Peláez reveló
que personal de la Procuraduría General de la República fue enviado a
Guadalajara en aviones militares minutos antes del asesinato del
cardenal Posadas, el 24 de mayo de 1993.

         “Jorge Carpizo debe aclarar por qué autorizó estos vuelos,
con qué objetivos y no andar, otra vez, tratando de desviar la
atención de los avances en el caso”, afirmó el diputado.

         Asimismo, José Antonio Ortega Sánchez, apoderado legal del
cardenal Sandoval, declaró que se debe investigar al ex procurador
Jorge Carpizo por la desaparición de parte del expediente que se
abrió para esclarecer la muerte del cardenal Posadas.

El cardenal Rivera desmiente al ex procurador

         Por otro lado, el arzobispo primado de México, cardenal
Norberto Rivera, salió al frente de las declaraciones del ex
procurador Jorge Carpizo contra el cardenal Sandoval y afirmó
que “todo aquel que acusa a alguien tiene que probarlo”.

         El Primado subrayó que es muy fácil acusar a los demás y la
Iglesia también podría hacer lo mismo sin tener pruebas. “Cualquier
hipótesis que se tenga sobre el caso tiene que ser probada y no
simplemente anunciada”, resaltó.

         Asimismo, el cardenal Rivera recordó que fue Carpizo quien
dio una primera versión en la que señalaba que el cardenal Posadas
murió a causa de un enfrentamiento entre dos bandas de
narcotraficantes. “A pesar de ello  –añadió–,  después se=
  comprobó
que el arzobispo de Guadalajara fue asesinado a una distancia de 60
centímetros”, por lo que Jorge Carpizo “se calló solo sin que n=
adie
lo desmintiera”.+

Los feligreses de la Iglesia Misión Dolores despidieron ayer a la
imagen del Divino Salvador del Mundo que se exhibirá en ocho
santuarios de Los Angeles, incluyendo el Valle de San Fernando, y el
peregrinaje concluirá con la tradicional Bajada o Transfiguración de
Cristo, el próximo 3 de agosto en el Parque Exposition.
"Enviamos un mensaje de paz al mundo y pedimos un alto a la violencia
en las calles de Los Angeles'', dijo el sacerdote Michael Kennedy,
tras la bendición de la imagen. "Tenemos la esperanza con esta
peregrinación de que acabe con el odio, asesinatos y balaceras desde
autos en movimiento, y la división entre las razas. Además, que el
Divino Salvador del Mundo continúe siendo el lazo de unión para que

The Significance of the 50th Anniversary of Moncada Barracks


July 26, 2003, marks the 50th anniversary of the attack on the Moncada
Barracks in Santiago, Cuba, the event that sparked the Cuban Revolution.

The American-backed dictator, Fulgencio Batista, began a reign of
terror against the Cuban people in 1933. He responded to his opponents
with assassinations, breaking labor strikes with machine-gun fire, and
other repressive measures against the Cuban people in order to
maintain the massive exploitation of sugar workers, farmers and women.
Under Batista's rule, the people became more impoverished while Cuba
was turned into a playground for mobsters and the wealthiest U.S. rulers.

Fidel Castro mobilized a group of young men and women willing to
participate in actions to bring democracy to Cuba. Their first act was
to launch an armed attack on the second largest military garrison in
the country, the Moncada barracks base of the Maceo Regiment in
Santiago, eastern headquarters of the military dictatorship. The
objective of the young revolutionaries was to call on the people of
Cuba to rise up against Batista. "We were convinced that it would be
the spark that would loose a revolutionary tempest over the entire
country", said Raul Castro, Fidel's brother.

On July 26, 1953, while the town celebrated Carnival, 125 men and
women launched an attack on the barracks at 5:15 AM. In military
terms, the attack was defeated. Most of the daring insurgents were
captured, Many were then tortured and executed.

Fidel escaped with about 18 others and fled into the mountains. They
were captured a week later.

Three years after his conviction, under pressure by a growing peoples'
movement, the Batista regime was forced to release Fidel Castro. Fidel
then led a small group of Cuban revolutionaries to Mexico, where they
prepared to return as guerrilla fighters.

They returned to Cuba on a boat named the Granma, and resumed the
military struggle. Five years, five months and five days after the
attack on Moncada barracks, Batista was forced to flee Cuba as the
guerillas of the July 26 Movement entered Havana in January 1959,
marking the triumphed of the Cuban Revolution.

The revolution has brought many gains to the population, such as a
free health and education system, and most important, the power to
exercise the right to self-determination.

Despite all difficulties caused by the criminal U.S. economic blockade
and other attempts to undermine the Cuban government, the spirit of
July 26, 1953 continues to provide strength to the Cuban people. The
United States' cruel and illegal blockade against Cuba over the past
44 years has not been able to destroy the revolution.

The determination and revolutionary spirit shown by those young Cubans
in the attack on the Moncada Barracks in 1953, continues today to
inspire a whole nation to defend their national sovereignty and
self-determination.

The Cuban people's determination to defend their revolution against
U.S. terrorism, subversion and economic blockade, continues to provide
an example for oppressed people around the world fighting for
liberation. July 26, 1953 was also of significance to oppressed
peoople everywhere.

No country in the world enjoys the affection and respect that Cuba
does, especially from the peoples of Africa and Latin America.

On July 26, 2003, the 50th anniversary of Moncada Barracks will be
celebrated throughout the world. While saluting the heroic Cuban
people, these events will also send a clear message to the
Bush/Pentagon war machine that the world will not stand idle if the
U.S. government continues its war preparations and provocations
against Cuba.

left, but those claims were soon exposed as crude lies.

Londres, 28 may (EFE).- Amnistia Internacional (AI) expreso hoy su
preocupacion por la impunidad en que se encuentran algunos
responsables de violaciones de derechos humanos en El Salvador en
2002, diez anos despues de la firma de los Acuerdos de Paz que
pusieron fin a una cruenta guerra civil.

En su informe anual sobre la situacion de los derechos humanos en el
mundo, presentado hoy en Londres, la organizacion humanitaria
denuncia que, pese a las mejoras registradas durante el pasado ano,
aun no habian sido procesados los responsables de violaciones
generalizadas de los derechos humanos en el pais centroamericano.

No obstante, explica que continuo la lucha para erradicar esa
impunidad y, como ejemplo, destaca la sentencia dictada en EEUU a
favor de tres salvadorenos victimas de tortura por ex generales del
ejercito del pais centroamericano.

Tambien denuncia que varios dirigentes sindicales salvadorenos del
sector de la salud fueron amenazados de muerte el pasado ano como
consecuencia de sus actividades legitimas.

AI senala en su informe que insto al Gobierno salvadoreno a que
investigara esas amenazas y garantizara a los ciudadanos su derecho a
desempenar libremente sus actividades sindicales.

Segun Amnistia Internacional, organizaciones no gubernamentales se
ofrecieron para asistir medicamente a las victimas de torturas e
investigar las "desapariciones" durante el conflicto civil y
propusieron a la Comision Internacional de Derechos Humanos
iniciativas para anular la Ley de Amnistia General y poder procesar a
los responsables de violaciones de derechos humanos.

Tambien denuncia que las autoridades salvadorenas hicieron caso omiso
a la recomendacion que hizo la Procuraduria para la Defensa de los
Derechos Humanos para reabrir y esclarecer definitivamente el caso de
la muerte del arzobispo Oscar Romero, asesinado en 1980 por un
comando ultraderechista.

AI lamenta que esten pendientes nuevas actuaciones judiciales en la
causa abierta sobre los seis jesuitas asesinados en 1989, a raiz de
que la Corte Suprema admitiera un recurso de amparo sobre una
anterior decision de un juzgado salvadoreno que desestimaba los
cargos contra las autoridades militares y civiles acusados de ordenar
la matanza.

La organizacion humanitaria resalta que en noviembre pasado la
Procuraduria para la Defensa de los Derechos Humanos acuso al Estado
salvadoreno de no haber investigado, procesado ni castigado a los
responsables de esos asesinatos y de incumplir las recomendaciones de
la Comision de la Verdad en 1993.

Dicha comision se creo en virtud de los Acuerdos de Paz para
investigar los crimenes de lesa humanidad que se cometieron en el

VATICAN CITY, JUNE 10, 2003 (Zenit.org).- The Vatican stated
unequivocally that the consolidation of democracy calls for the
eradication of poverty.

Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Angelo Sodano confirmed this
position in a letter sent on behalf of John Paul II to the
Organization of American States (OAS), which was meeting in Santiago,
Chile.

"The promotion and consolidation of democracy calls for the
elimination of poverty and all that which is, at the same time, its
cause and consequence," the cardinal said in the letter addressed to
María Soledad Alvear Valenzuela, Chile's Foreign Affairs Minister.

In particular, the cardinal mentioned "illiteracy, citizen
insecurity, criminality, terrorism, corruption, arms and drugs
trafficking."

In addition, democracy requires "the solution of so many other social
problems, such as discrimination, racism, intolerance and lack of
respect for human rights," the Vatican letter added.

"Without social, political and economic development, the very
instruments that should guarantee the good functioning of the
democratic system -- such as the right to vote, the party system,
electoral propaganda, etc. -- can easily become objects of
manipulation and patronage," the cardinal stated.

Lastly, the letter said that "the healthier is the family, the
healthier will society be."

"To be concerned about the stability of the family institution is,
therefore, a duty of the state, which it must effect through
legislation that favors and does not penalize the family," it said.

The letter continued: "The Holy See will never tire of repeating that
the family cannot be equated, by granting the same rights, with other
forms of union that do not have the sacred end and lofty commitment
to continue the human species and to educate the children, offering
them the warmth, protection, and material and spiritual opportunities
that they need to grow and to which they have a right."

The OAS comprises 35 countries. Cuba was excluded in 1962. It is the
region's principal political forum for multilateral dialogue and
decision-making.

la eliminación de la pobreza y de todo lo que es, al mismo tiempo, su
causa y consecuencia», afirma el purpurado en la misiva, dirigida a
María Soledad Alvear Valenzuela, ministra de Relaciones Exteriores de
la República de Chile.

En particular, menciona como causas y consecuencias: «el
analfabetismo, la inseguridad ciudadana, la criminalidad, el
terrorismo, la corrupción, el tráfico de armas y de drogas».

La democracia, añade la carta vaticana, requiere, además, «la
solución de tantos otros problemas sociales como la discriminación,
el racismo, la intolerancia y la falta de respeto de los derechos
humanos».

«Sin desarrollo social, político y económico los mismos instrumentos
que deberían garantizar el buen funcionamiento del sistema
democrático --como ser el derecho al voto, el sistema de partidos, la
propaganda electoral, etc.--, pueden convertirse fácilmente en
objetos de manipulación y clientelismo», asegura el purpurado
italiano.

En la segunda parte de su carta, deja dos consignas fundamentales
para la maduración de la democracia: el auténtico diálogo y el
respeto y promoción de la familia.

«¡Las ideas no se imponen, se proponen!», recuerda el cardenal
citando las famosas palabras pronunciadas por el Papa en Madrid el 3
de mayo pasado.

«El diálogo, que es la fuerza de la democracia, debe ser el credo de
los políticos. Por medio del diálogo las riquezas de unos se
convierten en patrimonio de todos y los errores se pueden corregir
antes que sea demasiado tarde», afirma.

«Con el diálogo se ponen las bases de una sociedad mejor y
verdaderamente democrática», asegura.

En segundo lugar, el pensamiento del Papa, afirma el cardenal, se
dirige «a la célula base de la sociedad: la familia», pues «cuanto
más sana sea la familia, más sana será la sociedad».

«Preocuparse por la estabilidad de la institución familiar es, por
tanto, un deber del Estado, que lo debe hacer también por medio de
una legislación que favorezca la familia y que no la penalice».

«La Santa Sede --concluye-- jamás se cansará de repetir que no se
pueden equiparar a la familia, concediéndole los mismos derechos,
otras formas de unión que no tienen la sagrada finalidad y el
altísimo cometido de continuar la especie humana y de educar a los
hijos, ofreciéndoles el calor, la protección y las oportunidades
materiales y espirituales que precisan para crecer y a las que tienen
derecho».

La Organización de Estados Americanos, cuyo secretario general es
César Gaviria, está compuesta por 35 países --Cuba fue excluida en

For nearly two decades, he's embraced the boys others have shunned.
He has prodded thousands of gang members to trade lives of violent
crime for honest work, visited them in hospitals and prisons,
comforted their families.

In the process, Father Gregory Boyle has become an iconic and healing
presence in his Boyle Heights community.

But now the priest is ill with leukemia, and the people he has so
deeply touched see that it is their turn to take care of him.

Since Boyle's diagnosis in March, he has been deluged with visits,
calls and letters from people ranging from the Los Angeles police
chief to homies in prison. Homeboys he hasn't seen in a decade have
turned up, tears streaming down their faces, offering their organs
and blood.

"I got a gang of blood, a gang of blood," Boyle says one homie told
him.

People have plied him with health juices, vitamins and offers of
Mexican healers and folk remedies. Actor Martin Sheen is urging him
to take an all-expenses-paid trip to Lourdes, France, where healing
miracles are said to occur.

Women at Dolores Mission Church, where Boyle first served as pastor
in 1986, have organized a weekly prayer service Thursday nights.

Lupe Lorea, 63, who started the gatherings two months ago, says she
first became close to Boyle 15 years ago when he visited her wounded
son at the hospital and stayed to listen to her troubled story of two
abusive marriages. Since then, she said, Boyle has helped to guide
her in raising eight boys as a single mother.

"He's the one who came to rescue me," Lorea said.

The first fund-raiser for Boyle's Homeboy Industries -- a $300-a-
plate affair at the Cathedral Center tonight featuring top Roman
Catholic clerics, public officials and such celebrities as Kirk
Douglas and Anjelica Huston -- quickly sold out.

"Everyone is thinking ... that this may be my eulogy," joked the
bearded and balding Boyle, 49. But the priest says his cancer
is "inching toward remission" and believes he will outlast the six
years that patients with his particular disease, chronic lymphocytic
leukemia, are typically given to live.

Boyle says the outpouring of love and care has overwhelmed him. "I
feel surrounded by God," he said. "I'm the luckiest person on the
planet."

The Los Angeles native of Irish descent first met suspicion from gang
members but eventually won their respect and trust after he
persistently sought them out, riding his bike through the Boyle
Heights housing projects. He learned not only fluent Spanish but
their slang, mastered the intricacies of gang life and showed them
what he calls his principle of "no matter whatness" -- "No matter how
bad it gets, you never withdraw love."

When the public schools kicked the gangbangers out, Boyle started a
school for them. When they told him that jobs would help keep them
from gangs, he sent 100 parish ladies into the streets to solicit
jobs from local businesses. When they began to call him "G-dog" --
these days shortened to "G" -- he knew he'd won their trust.

Angel Juarez, 23, said news about Boyle made some homies question
God's fairness. "God knows who's good and bad -- Why him?" asked
Juarez, who credits Boyle with turning him from drugs, booze and
crime to a stable life of faith, family and honest work.

"I just trust in God to keep him safe and heal him," said Juarez, who
was shot in the head in 1996 and now works from a wheelchair in
Boyle's office. "I just keep on praying for him."

Despite two difficult rounds of chemotherapy, Boyle looked fit and
surprisingly energetic during a visit this week to his busy office on
1st Street. A steady stream of young men, parents and friends stopped
by to remove tattoos, apply for jobs, seek advice about wayward sons
and plan tonight's event. As Boyle spoke, his eyes darted constantly,
ever watchful for any sign of skirmishes among visitors and the
former enemies now working side by side.

"Cesar, you have to work immediately the minute you get here," he
told one youth. Another walked into his office, fuming that his bike
had just been ripped off, then returned shortly later to announce
that it had been found. Boyle stopped him:

"As long as you got the bike, you don't get the kid, OK? It's
settled, right?" The youth nodded his head in assent.

Boyle pulled out a manila folder, proud as a new papa. In it were
pictures of an Alhambra bakery that, Boyle plans to announce tonight,
will be the new home of Homeboy Industries' baking operations, which
stopped in 1999 when the original bakery burned down. Film producer
Ray Stark, who donated the money for the first bakery, will be
honored tonight, along with Boyle's board members Joanne and Robert
Smith and a homeboy touted for his transformation, Fernando Leon.

The new bakery, Boyle says, will add 41 jobs for gang members trying
to turn around their lives. Homeboy Industries operates five
businesses -- silk-screening and embroidery, merchandising, graffiti
removal, maintenance and the bakery -- that have employed 500 youths
since opening in 1992. Its parent organization, Jobs For A Future,
offers services ranging from job placement to counseling.

"This is what a community of faith is all about: putting a welcome
mat out to those others find easy to despise," said Boyle, whose
critics say he "coddles" gang members.

Despite the energy displayed this week, Boyle says he has pared back
his normally frenetic speaking schedule and cut out virtually all of
his night visits to juvenile hall and other places. On Monday, he is
scheduled to start more chemotherapy, which earlier prompted painful
allergic reactions.

But Boyle finds humor in his circumstances. The day the disease was
diagnosed, he went home and told Father Michael Kennedy -- his
housemate, fellow Jesuit and Dolores Mission's current pastor -- the
doctor's warning: "Prepare yourself for the most harrowing time of
your life."

The two men stared at each other as the words hung heavily in the
air. Then they started howling.

"Death and life-threatening illness are not even on my top 10 list of
things I dread," Boyle said. "How are we going to pay our bills on
Friday? That's real-life dread."

He says he is ready for death at any moment and will feel "completely
peaceful" about it. Especially since he's caught a glimpse of what he
thinks heaven must be like.

That occurred last month, when Homeboy Industries held its first
baseball tournament and company picnic. More than 120 people showed
up, most of them from 29 gangs. Boyle knew the stories behind each
young man: that this guy was in a wheelchair because he had been shot
by that guy, that these two homeboys giving each other high-fives
had, at one time, been shooting at each other.

Now here they all were, playing and picnicking together.

"For some people, it was a baseball game. For me, it was a deeply
religious, extraordinary experience," Boyle said. "It was a real deep
sense that this is what God had in mind: that enemies will be
friends, and heaven won't be too different."
