La vicenda delle persone che la Chiesa, i cristiani, venerano come
santi, appartiene a quella dimensione dell' imponderabile che chi non
crede nella Provvidenza chiamerebbe del caso o della coincidenza:
quel qualcosa che trasforma radicalmente la vita di una persona e gli
fa seguire una strada diversa ed impensata. I casi sono tanti.

Il figlio non poco scioperato e gaudente di un ricco mercante dell'
Italia centrale scopre per la prima volta in vita sua il dolore e la
privazione, capisce che essi sono la condizione della maggior parte
delle persone e che Cristo comanda ai suoi fedeli di condividere tale
condizione. Allora incomincia a fare cose strane, abbraccia i
lebbrosi, si veste di sacco, da ai poveri i soldi paterni ed il padre
lo sbatte fuori di casa. Da qui l' inizio di una delle più
sconvolgenti rivoluzioni religiose della storia.

Un piccolo gentiluomo basco ha in mente solo la carriera delle armi e
desidera solo diventare il più grande generale del Re Cattolico: ma
nel corso di un assedio viene ferito, si rovina definitivamente una
gamba, e gradualmente capisce di poter diventare Generale di un'
altra Compagnia al servizio di un altro Re. Ed ecco che la Riforma
tridentina ha la sua truppa di assalto.

Un visconte francese, alquanto femminiere e con l' animo dell'
avventuriero, si interroga ad un certo punto se questo Gesù di cui
sentiva parlare in noiose riunioni di dottrina, non sia poi il vero
esempio da seguire, e va a cercarlo a casa Sua a Nazareth, e dopo
averlo trovato va a cercarlo ancora più lontano, a Tamanrasset, nel
cuore del Sahara, dove scrive una regola per dei fratelli che da vivo
non vedrà mai e poi viene ucciso da un fanatico spaventato. Ed ecco
che da qui nasce una famiglia magari non vistosa né numerosa, ma
capace di influire sulle vicende più significative della Chiesa che
prepara il Concilio, ed il cammino dei seguaci di Charles de
Foucauld, a partire da Renè Voillaume, si interseca con quello di
Madeleine Delbrel, di Alfred Ancel, il Vescovo – operaio che
condivide l' esperienza dei preti – operai, e in Italia molti aclisti
fra cui i sacerdoti milanesi Paolo Villa e Raimondo Bertoletti, che
impegneranno fra i Piccoli Fratelli tutta la loro vita.

E infine il nostro uomo, un teologo, uno studioso, un uomo che si era
sempre tenuto lontano dalla politica militante e che era stato messo
a capo della Diocesi più importante di un piccolo Paese
centroamericano il cui Episcopato non era mai stato noto per apertura
mentale o per indipendenza dal potere politico ed economico. Nulla
quindi, nella formazione e nel retroterra di Oscar Arnulfo Romero y
Galdamez , lo predestinava alle straordinarie circostanze del suo
intenso triennio di guida della Diocesi di San Salvador e al suo
drammatico e glorioso martirio.

Eppure, rileggendo a distanza di anni la vicenda di Monsignore, e
udendo le testimonianze e gli interventi di oggi, a partire da quelli
di Morozzo e di mons. Rosa Chavez, mi sembra di poter dire che non c'
è nulla di veramente strano nella "conversione al popolo", come la
chiamarono alcuni, di Romero, poiché essa altro non era che l'
espressione del continuo lavoro di conversione che il cristiano deve
compiere su se stesso nella condizione in cui si trova posto.
Infelici coloro – verrebbe da dire- che quando si trovano in posti di
responsabilità e di potere pensano di essere arrivati e di non avere
più bisogno di continuare la loro metànoia, il loro cammino di
costante rettificazione della mente e del cuore secondo la mente e il
cuore di Gesù!

Romero era quindi un sacerdote a tutto tondo che metteva Dio prima di
ogni altra cosa, e che proprio in funzione di questa centralità della
presenza del Dio di Gesù Cristo nella sua vita aveva preso atto della
situazione terribile in cui versava il suo Paese, in cui un' elite
ricca e conservatrice ammontante a non più del 2% della popolazione
dominava in condizioni di quasi schiavitù tutti gli altri, con il
consueto contorno di miseria, analfabetismo e mortalità infantile.

Alcuni sacerdoti avevano già preso posizione di fronte a questa
situazione, ed in particolare il padre gesuita Rutilio Grande, che
mons. Romero considerava come il suo principale consigliere, una
sorta di braccio destro. Il suo assassinio, avvenuto per mano dei
gruppi paramilitari al soldo dell' estrema destra nel 1978, aveva
determinato la svolta dell' arcivescovo, il quale – disse poi a padre
Sorge- di fronte al cadavere dell' amico ucciso aveva compreso all'
improvviso di come fosse impossibile predicare l' amore di Cristo
mentre il Suo corpo vivente, i poveri, venivano oppressi e uccisi da
un potere inumano e quindi anticristiano.

Non sempre la sua linea pastorale era stata  compresa, ed anzi certi
settori vaticani l' avversavano apertamente, mentre l' elite
salvadoregna guardava all' Arcivescovo come ad un traditore del suo
ambiente e della sua classe sociale. Nel libro di Giancarlo
Zizola "Le rose e le ortiche" viene ricostruita la penosa vicenda
delle incomprensioni che Romero dovette subire all' interno della
Conferenza episcopale salvadoregna – dove in sostanza era sostenuto
solo da Arturo Rivera y Damas, che sarebbe stato il suo successore –
ma soprattutto in Vaticano. Padre Sorge ha già ricostruito da par suo
(e lo farà ancor meglio nelle conclusioni) il senso di isolamento che
Romero visse durante l' assemblea della Chiesa latinoamericana a
Puebla nel 1979 , e che solo parzialmente venne alleviato dalla
lettera che 115 suoi confratelli di tutta l' Amerindia gli inviarono
in quei giorni per manifestargli piena solidarietà. Tuttavia, a
distanza di molti anni, fa ancora male leggere le parole sprezzanti
di qualche esponente di Curia che considerava quel confratello – già
morto, ed in che modo !- come un alienato od un manipolato da certi
settori della Compagnia di Gesù legati alla Teologia della
liberazione (fra i quali , immagino, anche Ignacio Ellacuria ed i
suoi compagni che seguirono Romero sulla strada del martirio dieci
anni dopo). Fa ancora più male leggere, dal diario di Romero, le
gravi incomprensioni che ebbe con Giovanni Paolo II, che forse intese
fino in fondo il vero animo di quel suo Vescovo solo quando venne
ucciso in quel modo sacrilego, al punto tale che quando al Colosseo,
nella primavera del 2000, si svolse la Via Crucis giubilare per i
martiri del XX secolo fu il Papa polacco in persona a volere che il
nome di Oscar Arnulfo Romero venisse inserito nell' elenco, ed ebbe
per lui parole meditate e commosse.

Mons. Romero, per conto suo, si sentiva tradito da coloro che
avrebbero dovuto essere i maggiori sostegni della sua idea di
giustizia sociale e di democrazia, in particolare dalla Democrazia
Cristiana, il cui leader, Josè Napoleon Duarte, era stato alcuni anni
prima il candidato presidenziale di un' inedita alleanza di
centrosinistra con le forze socialdemocratiche e radicali. Poi Duarte
e la maggioranza della DC si allearono con la destra con il
patrocinio degli USA, e i gruppi di sinistra passarono all'
opposizione armata fondando il Fronte di liberazione
nazionale "Farabundo Martì" : a loro si unirono alcuni esponenti
della sinistra democristiana.

Particolarmente clamorosa fu la rottura con la DC di Marianela Garcia
Vilas, giovane avvocata di buona famiglia, che si schierò decisamente
in difesa dei diritti umani conculcati dal Governo e dai
paramilitari, subendo per questo, lei ex deputato, l' arresto, la
violenza sessuale (che la precipitò in uno stato di depressione da
cui la trasse il conforto spirituale di mons. Romero) ed infine la
morte per mano assassina nel 1983.

La stessa mano assassina che, durante i funerali di Romero, aprì il
fuoco sui partecipanti alla funzione, presieduta dal Cardinale
Arcivescovo di Mexico City Ernesto Corripio Ahumada a nome di
Giovanni Paolo II, allineando morti e feriti sulla piazza della
cattedrale di San Salvador.

La guerra civile poi finì a seguito dell' accordo intercorso fra il
Governo e la guerriglia, ma il Salvador è e rimane fra gli Stati più
poveri del pianeta, l' elite dominante è ancora al suo posto e lo
stesso Episcopato, con l' eccezione dell' antico ausiliare di Romero,
mons. Gregorio Rosa Chavez, stenta ad essere voce di un popolo sempre
più impoverito che le dinamiche della globalizzazione hanno esposto
agli appetiti delle multinazionali. Del resto, elezioni che
potrebbero definirsi democratiche solo con riserva hanno da oltre
quindici anni conservato al potere il partito degli eredi del
maggiore Roberto D'Aubuisson, il quasi conclamato mandante dell'
omicidio di Romero, mentre la DC è praticamente scomparsa, a riprova
di quanto avesse ragione il democristiano cileno Radomiro Tomic
quando diceva ai suoi compagni di partito che "quando si vince con la
destra, è la destra che vince".

Non è un caso, credo, che il fascicolo 3 del 2005  di "Aggiornamenti
sociali" ospiti sia l' articolo di padre Sorge in ricordo di Romero
sia un documento della Commissione per l' apostolato sociale dei
Gesuiti del  Centroamerica  in cui si critica duramente, sul filo
degli insegnamenti sociali della Chiesa e dell' analisi concreta dei
problemi, l' accordo di libero scambio (CAFTA) fra gli USA ed alcuni
Paesi centroamericani, fra cui il Salvador, che sancisce di fatto la
sottomissione dell' economia di quegli Stati a quella del potente
vicino del Nord.

E l' Italia ? Cominciamo a dire che l' interesse per le vicende
latinoamericane , soprattutto nell' ambiente cattolico, viene da
lontano, viene probabilmente dall' attenzione per quell' enorme
subcontinente in cui molti nostri connazionali andarono a cercar
fortuna a cavallo fra il XIX ed il XX secolo, per quelle terre
prevalentemente cattoliche in rapporto al potente vicino del Nord
prevalentemente protestante.

Nello stesso tempo, già fra la fine degli anni Cinquanta e l' inizio
dei Sessanta, comincia a maturare un' attenzione diversa rispetto a
quello che gli USA avevano sempre concepito come il loro giardino di
casa, che ha probabilmente il suo primo episodio nella vittoria della
rivoluzione cubana nel 1959. Quella rivoluzione fu sostanzialmente
priva di qualsiasi riferimento religioso, e si trasformò ben presto
adottando formule di tipo socialista, ma in qualche modo si sentiva
che il modello tradizionale mostrava la corda.

Lo stesso governo statunitense, in particolare durante il breve
periodo kennediano, cercò di superare la tradizionale alleanza con i
ceti più retrivi e con le dittature militari dando vita alla stagione
del desarrollismo., dello sviluppo nella democrazia contro le
tentazioni rivoluzionarie che ebbe il suo perno dei partiti
democratico cristiani dell' America Latina e che si espresse
compiutamente nella campagna presidenziale del 1964 in Cile che vide
contrapposti Eduardo Frei e il candidato delle sinistre Salvador
Allende.  Agli osservatori italiani in particolare sembrava che il
desarrollismo fosse in qualche modo una variante sudamericana del
centrosinistra italiano, aprendo alla speranza di riforme di
struttura da gestire pacificamente in un contesto di generale
apertura alle istanze della classe lavoratrice.

Nello stesso tempo, l' onda del Concilio Vaticano II si levava all'
interno del mondo cattolico sui due lati dell' Oceano, e sacerdoti
come Camilo Torres, che sarebbe morto fra i guerriglieri colombiani
come guerrigliero senz' armi e Vescovi come Helder Camara divennero
figure popolari in Italia quasi quanto il Che Guevara, con una
tendenza al sincretismo politico e culturale non sempre positiva ma
indicativa di una mentalità, di un' epoca che troppo facilmente si è
volute liquidare senza che vi fosse un' analisi seria di quello che
vi stava dietro, la passione per la giustizia che, pur declinata
secondo forme secolari, aveva la sua fondazione ultima nel messaggio
evangelico.

Per certi versi fu proprio il Cile il paradigma sia dell' ascesa del
desarrollismo che della sua crisi, nel momento in cui le speranze
riposte dalle realtà giovanili e dai settori più avanzati del
movimento cattolico vennero messe in crisi dal sostanziale
conservatorismo del Governo Frei, e le speranze di mutamento interno
della DC affidata alla breve stagione della supremazia della corrente
di sinistra di Radomiro Tomic e Bernardo Leighton vennero spazzata
via dalla contrapposizione frontale con Unidad Popular.

D' altro canto, si dovette alla decisione di Tomic di spostare a
sinistra i consensi ottenuti nel primo turno presidenziale del 1970 a
decidere l' esito del ballottaggio fra Allende e il nazionalista
Alessandri , anche se la  breve stagione di connubio fra la DCe la
sinistra durò poco, e il riemergere della corrente "freista" portò
alla grave scissione del movimento giovanile e di parte della
sinistra interna con la nascita dell' Izquierda Cristiana guidata con
passione dal filosofo personalista Bosco Parra Alderete.

Proprio la crisi terminale della democrazia cilena ed il colpo di
Stato di Pinochet nel settembre 1973 determinarono una forte
impressione in Italia, e diedero , come è noto, l' ispirazione a
Berlinguer per la sua idea del "compromesso storico" come incontro
fra tutti i grandi filoni popolari per la tutela della democrazia:
non è un caso, del resto, che il PCI abbia sempre guardato con
sospetto alla nascita di un' Izquierda Cristiana in Italia, sabotando
deliberatamente i tentativi in tale senso di Livio Labor nel 1972 e
degli intellettuali cattolici che diedero vita alla Lega democratica
nel 1975, cercando un dialogo privilegiato con la DC e con la
Gerarchia ecclesiastica.

E' in questo contesto che si inserisce la vicenda Romero, non tanto
perché il Vescovo di San Salvador abbia nel corso della sua vicenda
terrena goduto di particolari attenzioni, quanto per la sua fine
paradigmatica (il dato comune di molte di queste vicende
latinoamericane è che finiscono regolarmente in tragedie) , ucciso
sull' altare mentre rinnovava il Sacrificio di Cristo e per questo,
agli occhi dei credenti, trasformato in alter Christus, in vittima
sacrificale che deliberatamente andava incontro al martirio non per
orgoglio (come il Quarto Tentatore insinua a Thomas Becket, anche lui
ucciso sull' altare, nel potente dramma di Eliot "Assassinio nella
cattedrale") ma perché la logica evangelica – l' unica che per lui
contasse- lo spingeva inevitabilmente a questo.

Ecco dunque che le parola di Romero , nelle sue omelie in Cattedrale,
tornano a rimbombare e a diventare slogan : "Fratelli, non uccidete
il vostro popolo" "Se mi uccidono io risorgerò fra la mia gente" ….

Parole che, sotto la penna di David Maria Turoldo diventarono anche
poesia, e lui stesso tre anni dopo ne scrisse, in presentazione di un
libro di don Abramo Levi che "La morte di Romero è il più purpureo e
squillante segno dei tempi: Dio è intervenuto a tempo giusto, sull'
uomo giusto, nel momento più santo, quando si consumava sul mondo la
passione di suo figlio, Gesù Cristo nostro signore, amen".

Ma queste parole ebbero anche un' eco in altre realtà da tempo
impegnate sulle frontiere della giustizia e della pace : basti
pensare a Pax Christi, allora guidata da mons. Bettazzi, alla Rete
Radiè Resch ancora oggi animata con indomita passione da Ettore
Masina, al Movimento dei laici per l' America latina ….

Una loro parte la fecero anche le ACLI, che furono fra i soggetti più
impegnati sulla dinamica internazionale, e che colsero da subito –
specie quelle milanesi- il senso profondo di questa testimonianza
insieme cristiana e civile rilanciandola in convegni e dibattiti
tenuti a livello territoriale. A Oscar Romero vennero anche dedicati
dei circoli territoriali, come si era fatto a suo tempo per Salvador
Allende e per Martin Luther King.

Va poi ricordato che proprio la vicenda di Mons. Romero ispirò al
cardinale Carlo Maria Martini una delle sua pagine più alte, quella
sua "dialogo e martirio", in cui l' Arcivescovo di Milano assumeva
come paradigmatica la vicenda del confratello ucciso pochi mesi dopo
che egli aveva assunto il suo ministero episcopale a Milano della sua
idea per cui il dialogo si può tentare con chiunque, e che il
martirio sia la conseguenza del dialogo negato da chi fa della
violenza il motore della propria vita. In ogni circostanza, infatti,
e Morozzo lo dimostra, Romero cercò di parlare, di dialogare con i
detentori del potere senza però mettersi in una posizione terza
rispetto alle esigenze del popolo che egli faceva proprie giacché
sapeva benissimo che Cristo si identifica nel piccolo e nel povero.

Ecco, forse il messaggio di Romero che più fa difficoltà a passare è
proprio questo, che il seguace di Cristo non può astenersi dal
prendere posizione, perché il messaggio del suo Maestro lo schiera
inevitabilmente non in un partito ma sicuramente da una parte,
perché "fra giustizia ed ingiustizia non esiste il centro", come
diceva Tomic, e perché, come ammoniva il laico Gobetti "Un giudizio
salomonico, quando da una delle due parti non c'è niente di ragione,
è altamente tendenzioso".

The election as pope of Joseph Ratzinger, who criticized liberation
theology, coincides with the 25th anniversary of the assassination of
the bishop, Oscar Romero, who embodied this way of thinking. It
raises questions about the future direction of pastoral action, not
only in Latin America, but in the church as a whole.

There are complex polarities.

Romero, for example, was devoted to the pope and had a great regard
for the papacy. Many liberals have difficulty comprehending this
reality. Still his friendship and spiritual affinity with members of
the movement Opus Dei show the possibility of common ground between
the two sides, that many conservatives find improbable.

A picture of the conflicted yet hopeful situation of the Latin
American church's relation to the poor and the role of the papacy was
presented by two Latin bishops who were recent speakers in Hamilton,
Ont.

Gregorio Rosa Chavez is auxiliary bishop of San Salvador, the diocese
led by Archbishop Oscar Romero until his assassination in 1980.
Bishop Luis Bambarén was bishop of Chimbote diocese in Peru. Lima's
Cardinal, Juan Luis Cipriani, has called Bambaren an enemy and
attempted to have him charged through Peru's judicial system.

In his talk in Hamilton,Bishop Chavez questioned the effectiveness of
the peace process in El Salvador. He said that his country had
endured a 12-year war, in which about 80,000 people died. In a
country of only six million, this means almost every family has had
casualties in the war. Although the peace process finished in 1992,
the roots of the war still haunt the country.

The Salvadoran conference of bishops published a document expressing
their concern that the "peace" was just a signature on a piece of
paper. Chavez noted that even after the signing of the peace accord,
there is more poverty and higher unemployment. The population lives
in a climate of permanent insecurity.

"We are the most violent country in Latin America," he said. "We have
a huge number of homicides. We signed a peace accord but not an
accord of reconciliation, because the government proposed a formula
of forgetfulness and forgiveness. In other words, they want us to
skip pages without reading them."

In his message for World Day of Peace in 1997, John Paul II stressed
that truth and justice are the prerequisites for peace. The evil done
must be acknowledged.Justice involves mutual forgiveness and does not
eliminate the need for reparation.

This was the better path taken in Chile, where the government and
people accepted the report of the Truth Commission and passed every
case on to the judicial system. The government offered the victims'
families free education and support for housing. Nothing of this sort
happened in El Salvador and, Rosa Chavez said, "because of that, the
peace is not a living of every day."

DIVISIONS IN PERUVIAN CHURCH

There are divisions in the Peruvian Catholic Church, in which
Monsignor Bambarén is accused of leading the opposition to Cardinal
Juan Luis Cipriani, who is a member of the deeply conservative Opus
Dei movement. These tensions divide the Peruvian bishops into
radically opposed camps. Bambaren admitted that he and Cipriani
represent what seem to be irreconcilable positions. "Monsignor
Cipriani was the bishop of Ayacucho, the zone in which "Shining Path"
acted with more cruelty and deaths." In Ayacucho, the Truth
Commission found that the church took a lamentable stand, keeping
silence in the face of many criminal acts and violations of human
rights.

Bambaren then became a critical opponent of Cipriani, particularly of
his close relationship with Peruvian President Alberto Fujimori.

"While the church has a right to strive for a good relationship with
any public institution, we cannot be attached to any government or
the military, in a context of army conflict, violence and war," he
said. Bambaren's knowledge comes first hand.

Many bishops in Latin America are still interested in liberation
theology's pastoral mode of discerning the church's mission. It
depends on theologians, such as Gustavo Gutierrez, and how interested
they are in continuing to work on its development.

Rosa Chavez believes that Gutierrez has a good relationship with
Cardinal Ratzinger and that the men could communicate in a
constructive theological manner. The relationship "was always full of
respect and marked by dialogue. They weren't deaf to each other."

The Salvadoran bishop hopes that future discussions about liberation
theology will be a defence of the truth rather than a defence of
positions. He offered a theory about the new pope. An examen of the
situation of the church and the world has been undertaken and some
orientations of how to respond to the challenges of the world and the
church today undertaken.

My impression of the recent conclave is that there were two positions
fighting, one under the leadership of Cardinal Ratzinger and the
other one under Cardinal Martini. At the end of the conclave, Martini
said: "This new pope will give us many surprises." Rosa Chavez
suggested the existence of an accord — some form of consensus among
the cardinals on how to guide the Catholic Church. Benedict XVI said
on April 24: "I have not a program; my program is what God wants from
me. I will not impose my own ideas." Rosa Chavez emphasized the new
pope's commitment to the unity of Christians, his realization that
the future of the church is in the hands of the laity, and his
concern for the peace of the world. "He is preoccupied with poor
people and is giving signs of being a faithful guardian of doctrine,
which is not the same as being a shepherd of everybody."

ROMERO'S LIFE

He continued: "Twenty-five years after Romero's assassination, the
issues and struggles of liberation theology continue. Liberation
theology is not just a way of thinking, but a way of living that is
part of the life and death of many Latin American Catholics. If the
church is to be faithful to its call as the people of God, it has to
find ways to imbue with faith and spirituality the lives of so many
human beings forced to live, and work, and hope in sub-human
conditions. Their hope cannot be located in some future, non-
terrestrial place. The church must find answers to the questions of
evil in the world that show what God's love entails.

"Mistakes in some of the theories of the liberationists, confusions
of Marxist and Christian views, are not grounds for dismissing the
reality that demanded a response from God and the church" he said.
The Vatican, according to Rosa Chavez, must actively participate in
the dialogue of liberation theology. Instead of policing theologians,
the Vatican will have to bring them together, as colleagues and
important members of the church. He recalled a meeting with
Archbishop Rivera y Damas, Romero's successor, and John Paul II,
where the question arose of why Romero was murdered. The pope,
according to Rosa Chavez was clear: "He is a martyr ... He died for
the Gospel, not because of Marxist ideas or political interference."

The pope said that Romero's life and his sermons were in accord
with "correct doctrine." I said to Cardinal Ratzinger "Romero is
ours, he is of the church. My intention was to demystify Monsignor
Romero because he is not a political flag but a symbol of
Christianity that can inspire everybody with his fidelity and
commitment to Jesus Christ and the church."

The Vatican's research into Romero's teachings — volumes of homilies
and pastoral letters — found no heresy, no false teaching. "In this
sense, liberation theology is not a doctrine but an act of faith and
witness. Like all human actions it is imperfect and can make
mistakes. But when it is embraced as a commitment of the local church
to discern how to become part of Christ's incarnation in the world
and to commit to pastoral activity, it opens all to the presence of
the Spirit and God's wisdom."

Carlos Angulo, the former editor of El diario de Marca in Peru, has

El Círculo de Bellas Artes de Madrid acogió ayer, 15 de diciembre, la
presentación del libro "Día a Día con monseñor Romero", que ha sido
prologado por Mons. Gregorio Rosa Chávez, obispo auxiliar de San
Salvador. El día anterior la presentación a los medios de
comunicación tuvo lugar en la sede de Cáritas Española. El libro ha
sido editado en España por Cáritas y PPC con ocasión del 25
aniversario de la muerte de Mons. Oscar Romero, arzobispo de San
Salvador asesinado en 1980 mientras celebraba una eucaristía.

PROFETA Y MÁRTIR

El acto contó con la presencia de Mons. Gregorio Rosa Chávez, obispo
auxiliar de San Salvador y presidente de Cáritas para América Latina
y el Caribe, además de colaborador estrecho de Mons. Óscar Romero.

Mons. Rosa Chávez afirmó que Mons. Romero fue un profeta, voz de los
que no tienen voz y un mártir. Explicó que algunos se preguntaban si
esta voz era la de un pastor o la de un agitador. De hecho, esta fue
una de las inquietudes de la Congregación para las Cuasa de los
Santos cuando planteó a la Oficina de Canonización del arzobispo de
San Salvador tres preguntas sobre Mons. Romero: quién lo mató por qué
lo mataron y en qué contexto le tocó ejercer su ministerio pastoral.

El prelado lo dejó claro. La Comisión de la Verdad aclaró la primera
pregunta. Y el Papa Juan Pablo II, en noviembre de 2001, afirmó que
era un martirio. Estas palabras se las dijo personalmente Juan Pablo
II a él y al Arzobispo de San Salvador Mons. Fernando Sáenz Lacalle,
en una audiencia privada, en el marco de una visita ad limina, al
preguntarle al Santo Padre cómo iba el proceso de canonización de
Mons. Romero.

En esta obra se ofrecen 365 pensamientos extraídos de las homilías de
Mons. Romero , en orden cronológico, entre el 29 de mayo de 1977 y el
24 de marzo de 1980. Son muchos los temas, todos ellos sobre la
Iglesia y la sociedad de El Salvador, su opción preferencial por los
pobres y su amor a Cristo.

También comentó que una de las famosas frases del arzobispo Óscar
Romero fue "la palabra queda". A partir de esta frase Mons. Rosa
Chávez apuntó que no hay que olvidar que "el profeta fue voz de la
Palabra, que es Cristo".

ABANDERADO DE LA LUCHA CRISTIANA

Mons. Alfonso Milián Sorbías, obispo de Barbastro-Monzón y
responsable de Cáritas en la Comisión Episcopal de Pastoral Social
(CEPS) se refirió, en esta presentación, a Mons. Oscar Romero como
referente en el trabajo de Cáritas a favor de los pobres y abanderado
de la lucha cristiana basada en el amor.

monseñor Milián deseó que "esta magnífica recopilación de textos
homiléticos de monseñor Romero traiga un poco de luz a este mundo
nuestro, tan necesitado de gritos de alerta como el suyo, que nos
incomoda para colocarnos en la transformación de unas estructuras de
desigualdad y pobreza empuñando el arma más poderosa, el arma del
amor".

"Hay muchas formas de luchar contra la injusticia, pero nosotros sólo
sabemos y sólo debemos luchar desde el amor porque es la fuerza por
la que el mismo monseñor Romero era movido, y por la que somos
movidos todos los cristianos, porque nuestro Dios es Amor", concluyó.

Providencia Hospital, Mons. Romero's Home and the chapel where he was
assassinated.
-- Visit to the UCA (Jesuit Central America University, Romero
Center, site of assassinations)
-- Visits with Maryknoll Lay Missioners at their ministry sites: Bajo
Lempa, Soy program, Aids clinic.
-- Experience the beauty of the beach of San Juan Nonualco.
-- Participate in events where traditional food, music and dances
will be presented!.
-- Participate with Salvadorans in the liturgy of Commemoration and
other activities around the 25th Anniversary.

The true story of archbishop Oscar Romero of El Salvador, who
heroically stood up against the violent military junta in his country
in 1980. Starring the acclained actor Raul Julia and directed by
Australian John Dulgan.  Very gripping from beginning to end.  Color,
in English, 105 minutes.

Every month, Cine-Raíces presents a movie that deals with
Hispanic/Latino themes.  Many films are from Latin America or Spain
and are in Spanish, with English sub-titles, while others have been
made in the United States and are in English.  All films are shown
free of charge in the Himmel Park Library meeting room on the third
Saturday of every month, at 2:00 PM and the public is cordially
invited to attend.  Most films last approximately 90-100 minutes and
are followed by a discussion.  Cine-Raíces is a companion group to

Cultural Immersion
El Salvador

Encounter the energies of the people of this lush tropical country as
they move into the new millennium. Spirited dialogue among political
factions, grass roots movements and religious leaders provides an
opportunity to better understand the people and beauty of this
diverse country. (Program begins in San Salvador)

The program includes several presentations that orientate the
participant to the reality of the country:

-- presentation at the internationally recognized Archdiocesan Human
Rights Office (Tutela Legal)
-- presentation on health promotion practices by a health group for
rural areas (CAP)
-- brief history of El Salvador
-- walk in the footsteps of the revered Archbishop Romero: the site
of his martyrdom, his simple bungalow, the new Cathedral where his
tomb has become a shrine
-- opportunity to shop for Salvadoran handicraft
-- presentation on spirituality in the struggle at the University of
Central America (where the Jesuits lived and were killed along with
their co-workers) and dialogue on the vision of peace after the war
-- visit the office of Pro-Busqueda de Ninos (DNA matching of
children, lost during the war or taken from their natural parents)
and learn about the successful reuniting of families
-- visit and dialogue at the U. S. Embassy
-- dialogue with farm workers at a cooperative

Some of the following will be included:

-- a visit to a cooperative housing development in Santa Ana (second
largest city in El Salvador)
-- presentations on the economy by FMLN (opposition party)
-- enjoy an ocean beach
-- learn about post-war violence and the family
-- visit the archeological site at Chalchuapa
-- experience the beauty of Cerro Verde, a national ecological
reserve near the old volcano, Itzealco
-- hear the story of maquiladora workers
-- participate in the annual commemoration of the Jesuit martyrs and
their co-workers

Accomodations will be triples with a bath. We would be happy to
arrange for doubles, at your request, at an additional cost of $50
total for the ten nights of the program. It may be helpful to note
that there is a laundry a few doors from our hotel. You may find it
convenient to plan on using this facility.

Travelers about the country are accompanied by GATE staff who serve
as translators and facilitators of the experience.

to local communities to experience the current realities of poverty
and how people are struggling to overcome it.

In Guatemala, the group will be oriented to the history, culture and
present realities of the country while in Guatemala City, then travel
to the indigenous community of Union Victoria to live and work and

Encyclopedia of Activism and Social Justice to be published by Sage
Publications. We need scholars with expertise in several areas, and
hope you will find a topic in an area of your expertise. We have
listed the topics below, but we are open to suggestions if you feel
we have left an important issue out.

There is a modest payment for entries, but, of course, we view this
as primarily a form of progressive scholarship in that Encyclopedia
entries are widely read and help to define social knowledge. If you
write entries totaling over 4,000 words, you will receive a free copy
of the three-volume encyclopedia. Entries range from 500 words up to
5,000 words, depending on the significance of the topic or person.

Option for the Poor - the Life and Death of Oscar Romero

The 2006 Howard Lecture, organised by the Universities of Brighton &
Sussex Catholic Chaplaincy Association, will be given by Julian
Filochowski, former head of Cafod (The Catholic Agency for Overseas
Development) at the Meeting House at the University of Sussex,
Falmer, at 7pm on Thursday, February 16, 2006.  All are welcome.

Archbishop Oscar Arnulfo Romero was gunned down while celebrating
Mass in a hospital chapel in San Salvador on March 24, 1980, because
of his championing of the rights of the poor.  He has since been
acclaimed by many as a hero of the struggle for justice and peace in
the Americas.

In addition to his many years of experience leading a major
development agency, Julian Filochowski served as a volunteer in
Central America between 1969 and 1973.  From 1977 he worked closely
with Archbishop Romero and his pastoral team and came to enjoy his
friendship. He is now Chair of the recently-founded Archbishop Romero
Trust.

El salario mínimo será de 500 dólares mensuales, lo cual hará
aumentar la demanda y, por consiguiente, la producción.

Habrá una transformación del sistema educativo nacional con lo cual
se cerrarán el 90 por ciento de las universidades privadas, quedando
sólo seis centros de estudios superiores.

Estudiar en el sistema educativo nacional por el alto nivel en la
educación provocará que miles de jóvenes de los diferentes estratos
sociales querrán estudiar allí, lo que inducirá el cierre de cientos
de colegios privados laicos y religiosos.

Los diputados, los magistrados, los jueces y los políticos serán los
ciudadanos ejemplares de la ética y la moralidad.

El Salvador ya no será un basurero, la gente aprenderá y conocerá
para qué sirven los basureros.

En el sistema fiscal los ciudadanos pagarán impuesto diferenciados de
acuerdo con el nivel de ingreso económico.

Se creará un ministerio de la ciencia y la tecnología para hacerle
frente de forma planificada el desarrollo autosostenible del país.

El Salvador se convertirá en un país que atraiga turistas e
inversionistas extranjeros.

Se despartidizarán las instituciones del Estado y se nombrará a
salvadoreños notables y de trayectoria intachable como altos
funcionarios públicos.

El Salvador será llamado la Suecia de Centroamérica.

El fin de año es el parteaguas más común en nuestras vidas. Es el
momento de hacer recuentos personales, familiares o nacionales, y
comenzar a escribir nuestra lista de deseos para el próximo año.

Es un tiempo propicio para hacerlo, porque generalmente viene, o
debería venir, acompañado de una mayor paz en los corazones de todos
los seres humanos.

A nivel personal, es momento de revisar qué perdimos y qué ganamos
desde la última vez que hicimos el mismo ejercicio, cuántos nuevos
miembros hay en la familia, o cuántos no nos acompañan ya para
despedir el 2005.

A nivel nacional, el recuento y las peticiones no distan mucho de las
que se hicieron el año pasado. La población, según las encuestas de
opinión, sigue creyendo que la economía y la falta de seguridad son
los mayores problemas del país y de ellos mismos.

Los recuentos no son nada halagadores. La violencia se ha
multiplicado, los homicidios aumentado y la policía y el sistema
judicial están rompiendo records de mínimos en cuanto a porcentajes
de capturas y encarcelamientos. En la parte económica, el costo de la
vida ha subido y no los salarios, hay desempleo y una huida constante
hacia otros países para buscar un mejor futuro.

Pero el año venidero, en ambos sentidos, promete cambios. El TLC
entrará en vigor en pocas semanas y el gobierno ha cambiado a las
principales estructuras en materia de seguridad. Nada aún permite
augurar una mejoría en ninguno de los dos rubros, pero los cambios
comienzan el año contando con el beneficio de la duda. El TLC puede
ser la última loza sobre los hombros de la pobreza nacional, pero
también podría servir para propiciar un mayor desarrollo nacional con
una certeza jurídica que permita un accionar real y no manipulado del
mercado, abrir fuentes de empleo, sí, pero también impulsar mejorías
en la educación y la salud.

En la parte de seguridad, a pesar de las enormes dudas que plantea el
nombramiento del nuevo viceministro de gobernación (quien viene de
intentar sin éxito controlar el sistema penitenciario y declaró la
semana pasada que los estudios académicos sólo estorban sus
funciones) y del nuevo director de centros penales, hay también un
cambio en la dirección de la PNC, que resulta en principio positivo
si se toma en cuenta que se trata de un civil, acorde con el carácter
de la institución, y alguien aparentemente más preocupado por el
combate al crimen que por evangelizar a sus miembros,

El país necesita que estos funcinarios tengan éxito, lo que dependerá
en gran medida de un cambio drástico en la estrategia hasta ahora
seguida por los últimos dos gobiernos para combatir el crimen y un
mayor involucramiento de toda la sociedad.

Para el año 2006, nuestra lista de deseos comienza por paz y
prosperidad para todos, un país con ciudadanos dignos y un gobierno
serio y responsable. Para ustedes, nuestros lectores, refrendamos
nuestro compromiso de seguir ejerciendo un periodismo independiente y
sin amarras, y extendemos nuestros deseos de dicha y nuestro

Pace per le vie della città, con il desiderio di offrire un momento
significativo e alternativo ai vari appuntamenti mondani che la data

La marcia sarà composta da tre momenti attraverso lo sviluppo del
tema "PACE e VERITA'" (dal tema del messaggio del Papa):

-VERITA' e MARTIRIO (ricordando la figura di Mons. Oscar Romero nel

-VERITA' e DISARMO (con un'attenzione alla situazione dei Grandi
Laghi in Africa)
-VERITA' e RICONCILIAZIONE (attraverso una veglia di preghiera

L'inizio è previsto per le ore 21.30 alla sala ReGio, in via Agosti,

La Marcia proseguirà con la sosta successiva davanti al piazzale
Marconi della stazione FS dove verranno lette quattro testimonianza
sulla situazione attuale in Congo e nella zona dei Grandi laghi con
l'appello dei Vescovi a pregare per la pace in tutta l'area.

Infine la veglia in S. Pietro, con inizio alle ore 23.30 circa, con
testi del beato Charles de Foucauld commentati da don Mario
Aldighieri, sacerdote della diocesi di Cremona e membro della
Fraternità sacerdotale Jesus Caritas.

Vatican, Dec. 29 (CWNews.com) - Pope Benedict XVI may soon name new
members of the College of Cardinals, according to rumors in the
Italian press.

The ADN Kronos news agency has gone so far as to say that the Pope
will call a consistory for February 22, the feast of the Chair of St.
Peter. Citing "informed Vatican sources," ADN Kronos said that the
consistory will be announced-- and presumably the new cardinals will
be identified-- on January 6, the feast of the Epiphany.

The rumors of a consistory have circulated quickly in Rome. Pope
Benedict and his immediate staff aides have closely guarded the
confidentiality of the Pope's thoughts and policy decisions. The
sudden burst of public speculation could signal that news of the
pending consistory has passed beyond the pontifical household.

The timing also seems right for a consistory. The College of
Cardinals now has 111 members who are below the age of 80 and thus
eligible to vote in a papal conclave; the regulations established by
Pope Paul VI in 1975 allow for 120 cardinal-electors.

Moreover, there are many leading prelates who appear to qualify for
red hats. For example, Archbishops William Levada and Fran Rodé are
now prefects of major Vatican congregations-- the Congregation for
the Doctrine of the Faith and the Congregation for Religious,
respectively-- whose leaders have always been cardinals.

Other Vatican officials who could join the College of Cardinals might
include Archbishop Agostino Vallini, the prefect of the Supreme
Tribunal of the Apostolic Signatura; Archbishop Stanislaw Rylko,
president of the Pontifical Council for the Laity; Archbishop Michael
Fitzgerald, president of the Pontifical Council for Inter-Religious

Moreover, there are many archdioceses around the world which are

The timing of a consistory could also be tied to the announcement of
new appointments to the leadership of the Roman Curia. Several
prominent Vatican officials have now served well beyond the ordinary
retirement age of 75. Most prominent among these is the Secretary of
State, Cardinal Angelo Sodano (bio - news), who is now 78 and has
held his current post for 14 years. Cardinal Edmund Szoka, the
governor of the Vatican city-state, is also 78. Cardinal Dario
Castrillon Hoyos will turn 77 in July, by which time he will have
served over 10 years as prefect of the Congregation for the Clergy.

Other Vatican officials who have passed their 75th birthdays include
Cardinals Julian Herranz, president of the Pontifical Council for
Legislative Texts; Stephen Fumio Hamao, president of the Pontifical
Council for Migrants; Paul Poupard, president of the Pontifical
Council for Culture; and Ignace Moussa I Daoud, prefect of the
Congregation for Eastern Churches.

If he does announce a consistory, Pope Benedict is likely to make
some unexpected appointments, offering evidence of his own policies
and priorities. A cardinal's red hat is the highest honor that the
Pope can bestow on a living cleric.

During his long pontificate Pope John Paul II held nine ordinary
consistories, naming 231 cardinals, of whom 169 are still alive.

There has not been a consistory since October 2003, when Pope John
Paul II named 30 new cardinals and created 2 others in pectore-- that
is, secretly. Since Pope John Paul died without having revealed the
identity of those two prelates, they cannot assume their role as
cardinals unless the deceased Pontiff left behind some indication of
their identity.

pronto nombrar nuevos miembros del colegio cardenalicio, según
rumores en la prensa italiana.

Today is the 835th anniversary of the martyrdom of St. Thomas à
Becket, the murder of an archbishop at the altar which so convulsed
Medieval Europe in 1170 that it precipitated a chain of events that
began with the public scourging of the monarch who called for the
cleric's death, and led to such far ranging consequences as the
canonization of the archbishop and reforms that led to the drafting
of the Magna Carta.  The blows that echoed in the chapel on that
historic night still resonate to this day, and so do the words that
punctuated that ancient conflict.



-- «WHO WILL RID ME OF THIS MEDDLESOME PRIEST?»



These were the fateful words uttered by King Henry II, which inspired
some of his knights who overheard the exclamation to assassinate
the "turbulent" cleric who had become a thorn in the monarch's side
(by opposing legal reforms that Henry wished to bring about which
would diminish the rights of the Church).  Those words would cast an
ominious shadow over the ages because they introduced a concept we
are familiar with in our modern age: the theory of "plausible
deniability."  No, the King had not said "go kill the archbishop."
He had simply insinuated, in the presence of armed men who had sworn
allegiance to the death to their king, that it would be to his
pleasing that this nuisance be eliminated.  This would usher in the
era of sophisticated despots, of the "Modern Tyrant:"

"The modern tyrant is very sophisticated.  He pretends not to be
against religion or even interested in it, so he does not ask their
victims what their faith is.  But in reality he is either without
religion or makes some ideology into ertsatz religion."  (WOODARD,
Making Saints: How The Catholic Church Determines Who Becomes A
Saint, Who Doesn't, And Why. 1990. At 141).

-- «HERE I AM, NO TRAITOR, BUT ARCHBISHOP AND PRIEST OF GOD.»



The king's men violate the silent night (just a few days after
Christmas) and the sanctity of the Cathedral, confronting the cleric
who eloquently identifies himself and the interest he is defending --
the Church of God.  The actual dispute between the King and the
Church was complicated, and it would take the renegotiation of the
social compact -- and the Protestant Reformation -- to sort it all
out.  But, the short of it that night was that Henry hoped that one
little killing -- a medieval version of today's "surgical strike" --
would resolve the dispute.  The other thing that is clear is that
Thomas, regardless of the merits of the dispute, which may not be
black and white, but gray -- was willing to sacrifice his own life
for the sake of the Church.

In essence, what we have is an archbishop going out on a limb for
what he saw as the intractable right of the Church.  And we have a
King who could claim that the priest was out of line, and being
subversive to the state.  That pattern would recur!

St. Thomas' final words before the blows began.  The particulars of
the Church vs. State confrontation were murky and gray, but martyrdom
is always a matter of crystalline purity, and clarity of conviction.
St. Thomas was serene at the hour of death, and he had to be, knowing
that he was being killed for defending the interest of the Church,
for speaking out in defiance of a King who now proved to be willing
to smite out dissent by the force of the sword, and for espousing
what he believed to be the correct course of conduct.  In short,
Thomas was the classic victim of conscience -- again, an archetype
that would recur in our modern history.

The knight's parting words, as they walked away from the crime.  They
congratulate themselves, thinking that the deed is done.

Malicious ambition!  Don't they know? -- "a bishop will die, but the
voice of justice will not be stilled"!  This is the classic error of
the transgressor in these cases.  Like Joseph's brothers, they think
that if they kill the Dreamer, they can kill the Dream.  (Gen. 37:18-
28.)  They walk away from the pit into which they cast the
prophet "content" (Gen. 37:27) that the prophetic voice of
denunciation will sound no more.  Instead, these voices echo
throughout history and appeal to us with greater power than if the
speakers had died from natural causes at a ripe old age.

Eight hundred and thirty five years have elapsed.  But, the blood of
St. Thomas is still fresh, and his words resound, now, loud as ever.

Mientras los niños no tengan un hogar digno con suficiente pan,
educación y salud, seguirán siendo víctimas inocentes de las
injusticias de los adultos, sostuvo en su mensaje el Obispo Auxiliar
de San Salvador, Gregorio Rosa Chávez, durante la misa oficiada en
honor a los santos inocentes.

Este día se conmemora la persecución que ordenó el rey Herodes contra
los niños menores de dos años en Belén, Judea para encontrar al niño
Jesús, según la historia Cristiana.

Rosa Chávez asegura que esta persecución no termina, ya que el mundo
continúa maltratando a los que son el futuro de la humanidad.

"Los niños siguen siendo maltratados, es importante que reflexionemos
y pongamos un alto a la violencia, debemos de comenzar a ver el mundo
bajo la óptica de los inocentes".

La misa en honor a los santos inocentes se realiza en la parroquia
denominada del mismo nombre, en Antiguo Cuscatlán.

En este lugar se reúnen cientos de feligreses para agradecer al
Todopoderoso por los milagros y bendiciones recibidas.

María Luz López asegura que asiste a esta tradición desde su
infancia, al tiempo que afirma haber recibido infinidad de
bendiciones para sus hijos y nietos, al tiempo que reflexiona que
muchos menores permanecen en las calles víctimas de frío y hambre.

"Los niños están pagando los errores de nosotros los adultos y aunque
ahora ya no se persigan para matarlos, los abusos que se comenten
contra ellos vuelve a repetir la historia".

En la parroquia Santos Inocentes, los fieles adornan carrozas con
estatuillas representando al niño Jesús en agradecimiento por los
milagros recibidos. Esta tradición inicia con el ingreso de la madre
de todos los niños, Santa Juana.

Sobre las bromas que realizan las personas en este día, el religioso
dijo que es bueno mantener sentido del humor, sin embargo, esto
desvía el mensaje que debería recibir la población que es brindarle
protección y amor a los santos inocentes.

La reflexión de monseñor Gregorio Rosa Chávez fue en defensa de los
niños que sufren cualquier tipo de violencia.

Las voces de los grupos de moda repetían una y otra vez el mismo
estribillo. Los vendedores de elotes locos, tostadas de plátano,
churros españoles y ponche anunciaban sus productos.

Eran las 10 de la mañana, el calor aumentaba en los alrededores del
parque central de Antiguo Cuscatlán, donde se realizaría la misa en
el marco de la celebración de las fiestas patronales en honor de los
Santos Niños Inocentes.

Los feligreses se acomodaban en las sillas instaladas bajo los toldos
por el comité de festejos, la comuna y la parroquia de Antiguo
Cuscatlán.

A la actividad asistieron pobladores de diferentes comunidades, no
solo de Antiguo Cuscatlán, sino también de otros municipios de los
departamentos de San Salvador y La Libertad.

Melisa Morales, de 16 años, junto a seis miembros de su familia,
llegó a participar en la misa desde el municipio de Comasagua. "Es
una tradición venir y traer a los niños para cumplir las promesas que
se le han hecho al Niño Jesús", cuenta Melisa, mientras carga a su
sobrina Paola Pérez, de tres años.

El inicio de la misa fue anunciado con los cánticos religiosos. El
ruido de los alrededores del parque central fue disminuyendo
paulatinamente.

"Este día la Iglesia nos invita a ver el mundo con los ojos de los
niños, con los ojos de Dios", dijo monseñor Gregorio Rosa Chávez,
obispo auxiliar de San Salvador.

El religioso apeló a los corazones de los salvadoreños para
reflexionar sobre la violencia física, sexual y sicológica que viven
los niños actualmente.

"A muchos niños les violentan el derecho a la vida, no permitiéndoles
llegar al mundo, y los que nacen no tienen lo que necesitan, que es
amor, pan, vivienda digna, hogar, educación, salud y otros derechos
básicos", señalo monseñor.

Al recordar el pasaje bíblico en el que se describe cómo los niños
menores de dos años fueron asesinados por el rey Herodes en sus
ansias de matar al Niño Jesús, monseñor Rosa Chávez dijo que es
difícil explicar cómo Dios permitió tan horrible hecho.

"Aunque el contexto en el que vivimos es de gran expectación, porque
hay muy poco optimismo y mucha preocupación de lo que está sucediendo
en la realidad", relató el obispo.

En el acto, los feligreses presentaron diferentes ofrendas a la
iglesia de Antiguo Cuscatlán.

En la bendición final, monseñor Rosa Chávez instó a los feligreses a
que traten de hacer felices a los niños. "Es tan fácil amarlos,
escucharlos y respetar sus derechos", concluyó el religioso.

Los asistentes a la homilía aplaudieron esa última reflexión y
comenzaron abandonar el parque ambientado para la eucaristía, dejando
atrás los cánticos religiosos para escuchar nuevamente los
estribillos de los grupos de moda que se repiten una y otra vez.

La eucaristía constituye una de las actividades más importantes en
las fiestas patronales.

El parque central del municipio de Antiguo Cuscatlán fue convertido
en escenario religioso, donde se realizó la eucaristía, en el marco
de la celebración de las fiestas patronales en honor de los Santos
Niños Inocentes.

El lugar fue atiborrado por los feligreses que llegaron cargando a
sus niños en cumplimiento de promesas hechas durante el año al Niño
Jesús.

La misa fue celebrada por el obispo auxiliar de San Salvador,
Gregorio Rosa Chávez, y otras autoridades eclesiásticas.

Con una solemne misa a las 10 de la mañana de ayer iniciaron los
habitantes de Antiguo Cuscatlán el último día de las fiestas
patronales.

La ceremonia se realizó en el parque central y estuvo presidida por
Monseñor Gregorio Rosa Chávez, quien instó a los concurrentes a velar
por los derechos de la niñez salvadoreña.

"No debemos permitir que nuestros niños sigan siendo objeto de
agresiones físicas y sexuales", añadió.

Otros feligreses llegaron a la oficina parroquial para observar las
151 imágenes del Niño Dios que habían llegado de algunos municipios
como Soyapango, Mejicanos, Santa Tecla y Ciudad Arce, entre otros.

Doña Catalina de Campos desde hace siete años lleva su niño como
ofrenda por la petición que hizo al Creador por la cura de su hijo
que nació con hidrocefalia.

"Mi hijo ahora tiene siete años y tengo fe en que algún día va a
mejorar", dijo.

En el patio de la parroquia se colocó una estructura para que los
católicos colocaran las velas encendidas como un símbolo de
agradecimiento por las bendiciones recibidas durante el año.

A las 4 de la tarde inició la procesión con la patrona Santa Juana,
la cual recorrió las principales calles del municipio.

Sin lugar a dudas, en diciembre de 2006 se volverá a vivir esta
tradición religiosa que se ha convertido en un simbolismo de fe para
muchos salvadoreños.

Muchas gracias. Debemos seguir iinsistiendo en la
realidad de que Monseñor Romero es santo. El pueblo al
menos así lo está definiendo desde la experiencia.

Due pontifici -- il amato Papa Giovanni Paolo II
e suo sucesore, Benedetto XVI -- hanno parlato di
Romero in 2005 e tutta la cristianità ha
celebrato la sua memoria questo anno.  2005 è
stato per molti aspetti l'anno di Mons. Romero.

• L'ANNO DI TUTTI NOI

Ora che cosa è necessario è risoluzione.  In
primo luogo, la Chiesa deve risolvere che è un
martire della Fide.  Allora il resto di noi
necessità di risolvere seguire il suo coraggioso
esempio.

Vi auguro tutti un esemplare e produttivo anno
2006!

• EL AÑO DE MONSEÑOR ROMERO

El 2005 ha sido el año de Monseñor Romero.  Este
año hemos conmemorado el 25 aniversario de su
martirio y hemos visto un progreso, aunque sea
incierto, en la causa de su beatificación.

• EL AÑO DE LA EUCARISTÍA

Este año de la Eucaristía, el aniversario Romero
coincidió con el Jueves Santo, día de la
institución de la primera Eucaristía.  Sabemos
tambien que Romero murió consagrando la
Eucaristía.

• EL AÑO DE DOS PAPAS

Dos pontífices -- el amado Juan Pablo II y su
sucesor, Benedicto XVI -- han hablado sobre
Romero en el 2005, y toda la cristiandad ha
celebrado su memoria este año.  En muchos
respectos, el 2005 ha sido el año de Monseñor
Romero.

• EL AÑO DE TODOS NOSOTROS

Lo que se necesita ahora es la resolución.  La
iglesia debe resolver que él es un mártir de la
Fe.  Después, todos nosotros debemos de resolver
que seguiremos su valiente ejemplo.

marked the feast of Christianity's first martyr, noting that
Christians still are persecuted for their faith in some parts of the
world.

Benedict addressed crowds in St. Peter's Square in his traditional
blessing the day after Christmas, which is the feast of St. Stephen,
a disciple who was stoned to death for saying he had seen Christ
standing at the right hand of God.

"How can we not recognize that even these times, in various parts of
the world, professing Christian faith requires the heroism of
martyrs?" the pontiff said.

Benedict did not mention by name countries where Christians are still
persecuted, but the Vatican has expressed concern about Iraq, where
the constitution promises religious freedom but says Islam is "a
fundamental source" of legislation.

The Holy See also has been pushing for greater religious freedom in
China, whose officially atheistic communist government allows
Catholics to worship only in tightly controlled state churches. Those
who meet in other churches are frequently harassed, fined and
sometimes sent to labor camps.

CIUDAD DEL VATICANO, dic. 26, 2005.- La historia de la Iglesia
católica está llena de mártires y también en la actualidad profesar
la fe cristiana en varias partes del mundo requiere del heroísmo del
martirio, señaló este lunes el Papa Benedicto XVI.

Al celebrar desde la ventana de su estudio que da a la Plaza de San
Pedro la misa del Ángelus por el día de San Esteban, el primer mártir
de la Iglesia, el Pontífice dijo que recordar a ese santo ¡no debe
parecer fuera de lugar en la atmósfera de alegría de Navidad".

"Cómo no reconocer que también en este tiempo, en varias partes del
mundo, profesar la fe cristiana requiere el heroísmo de los
mártires", agregó el máximo jerarca de la Iglesia católica.

"¡Cómo no decir también que por doquier, incluso donde no hay
persecución, vivir el Evangelio con coherencia comporta un precio
alto que pagar", Indicó.

Recordó que ya desde inicios del cristianismo "muchos testimoniaron
la propia fe con la profusión de sangre" y que los primeros mártires
fueron seguidos muchos más en el curso de los siglos y hasta nuestros
días.

"Así como Jesús en la cruz se entregó completamente al Padre y
perdonó a sus asesinos, así Esteban, al momento de su muerte, rezó
diciendo: `Señor Jesús, recibe mi espíritu'", afirmó Benedicto XVI.

"Esteban es un auténtico discípulo de Jesús y su perfecto imitador.
Inicia con él aquella larga serie de mártires que han confirmado la
propia fe con la oferta de la vida, proclamando con su heroico
testimonio que Dios se hizo hombre para abrir al hombre el Reino de
los Cielos", dijo.

Como es tradicional, al término de la oración, el Papa dirigió a los
presentes saludos en varios idiomas.

"Saludo cordialmente a los peregrinos de lengua española aquí
presentes y a cuantos participan en el rezo del Ángelus a través de
la radio y la televisión", comentó en castellano.

"Que el Misterio del Dios hecho hombre en Belén, que iluminó la vida
del primer mártir, San Esteban, cuya fiesta celebramos hoy, alumbre
nuestro camino para dar testimonio de amor y paz. Felices fiestas",
enfatizó.

La noche despejada y con poca luz eléctrica, regaló un cielo colmado
de estrellas al pueblo de Guarjila, quienes rindieron la misa de fin
de novenario y la vigilia en memoria de uno de los hijos predilectos
de esa comunidad, el sacerdote jesuita, Jon Cortina.

La presencia de toda la diócesis de el departamento en Chalatenango,
marcó la solemnidad del acto litúrgico, que inició con una procesión
por las principales vías del pueblo y culminó con un acto cultural y
de intercambio de experiencias, con el "papá", como le llaman todos
con cariño a Jon Cortina.

Las lecturas escogidas para el acto litúrgico también adquirieron ese
derrotero, la entrega al prójimo, el amor a la justicia y esperanza
en Dios, de un mundo más solidario.

Monseñor Eduardo Alas instó a los pobladores de Guarjila, Los
Toriles, Arcatao, Los Rosales, Las Minas y más de quince comunidades
entre Chalatenango y Cabañas, a agradecer los bienes que en vida dejó
para todos Cortina, con su ejemplo y la ejecución de las obras.

"Yo he tomado la muerte de Jon Cortina, como la pascua de él, por eso
pedí ornamentos blancos, estamos celebrando su paso a la Vida con el
Señor, haciendo lo que más le gustaba, aliviar el sufrimiento de los
demás, de las madres que habían perdido sus hijos y los recuperaron,
ese fue su éxito, su triunfo en su camino lleno de sacrificios",
comentó Alas.

Asimismo, hizo referencia a su entrega por las comunidades a las que
consideraba su hogar, y a todos sus habitantes la familia, a la que
nunca faltó consejo del jesuita.

"Él vivió como Cristo… optó por los pobres, y por eso se vino a vivir
aquí, con los pobres y por eso debemos alegrarnos, el compartió el
dolor de los pobres y trabajó incansablemente para llevarles
esperanza a todos los que conoció y llevarles alegría", dijo Alas.

El prelado católico agregó que el deceso de Jon Cortina fue para
muchos una mala noticia, pero llamó a tomarlo como la bendición de
Dios, de llamarlo a su presencia.

"Él escogió el camino de la vida, y ahora hay que agradecer a Dios
que nos dio a ese hombre, que con su trabajo y entrega, solo podemos
rendirle mucha gratitud.

Él permanecerá encarnado en nuestra comunidad, por lo que siempre
estará vivo, entre nosotros", puntualizó Alas.

"Aquí oficiaba la misa el padre Jon Cortina, y aquí era donde lo
íbamos a enterrar", señala José Mejía, de 84 años, mientras descansa
en una de las bancas de la capilla en donde tantas veces escuchó el
sermón del padre jesuita, en la comunidad de Guarjila.

Mejía, quien recuerda al padre Cortina con mucho amor, resiente la
pérdida del "hombre que optó por los pobres y no por los ricos. Eso
no lo vamos a olvidar nunca", advirtió.

Este humilde hombre, quien se ha dedicado durante toda su vida al
cultivo de la tierra, recuerda con nostalgia el buen humor de
Cortina, quien en las situaciones más difíciles siempre estuvo junto
a esta comunidad, que hoy se siente huérfana de un guía espiritual.

"Queremos otro sacerdote, va a costar tenerlo, pero queremos que sea
como Cortina, que luche siempre al lado de nosotros", puntualiza,
mientras advierte que en el pueblo se edificará un moderno templo,
pero que la humilde capilla hecha de cipreses y lamina que Cortina,
les ayuda a edificar, permanecerá intacta "como un recuerdo y un
homenaje a él", indicó.

Al igual que la casa en donde habitó Cortina, en estos años, y la
cual permanece cerrada, desde su partida al viaje que realizó a
Guatemala, y en donde falleció el pasado 12 de diciembre.

Cortina, acudía cada domingo a oficiar la misa en este cantón, del
municipio de San Antonio Los Ranchos, en el departamento de
Chalatenango, en donde ayudó a la comunidad a construir una clínica,
las viviendas de los repobladores de "Mesa Grande", entre otros
proyectos. "Cortina nos ha dejado de herencia la solidaridad, que nos
ayudará a seguir luchando para que nos amemos unos a otros como él
nos amó", recordó el anciano.

Mejía también recordó cómo Cortina, estuvo al lado de ellos durante
la guerra, y luego "participó de marchas, estuvo con los lisiados,
sudó bajo el sol con nosotros, sonrió y luchó", enfatizó.

Tras agregar que "él nos tuvo un gran amor y que lo demostró
trabajando enseñándonos a ser solidarios y ha estar organizados, para
enfrentar cualquier situación difícil hasta su muerte".

La tradizionale marcia della pace di Capodanno si svolge a Trento sul
tema "Nella verità, la pace". Un momento di riflessione forte tra
preghiera e testimonianze.

In strada per testimoniare la pace di Cristo. Per la 38ma volta
consecutiva, il movimento Pax Christi, fondato da mons. Tonino Bello,
torna a vivere la notte dell'ultimo dell'anno all'insegna della
preghiera e della riflessione. Dopo Assisi, Siena, Locri e Ragusa la
marcia della pace arriva in Trentino Alto Adige, a Trento. Nella
notte tra il 31 dicembre e il 1° gennaio migliaia di persone di tutta
Italia marceranno per le strade delle diocesi, riflettendo sul tema
della giornata mondiale della pace "Nella verità, la pace". Il
cammino sarà guidato dalle parole di numerosi testimoni come il
vescovo di Trento, mons. Luigi Bressan e dalle riflessioni, tra gli
altri, di mons. Oscar Romero e Frere Roger di Taizé.
