FOUNDER OF RELIGIOUS COMMUNITY SLAIN IN FRANCE

TAIZE, France (AP) — Brother Roger, the 90-year-old founder of an
ecumenical religious community dedicated to peace and
reconciliation, was knifed to death by a woman at an evening prayer
service attended by 2,500 people, authorities said.

The slaying was deplored Wednesday by the pope and the head of the
Anglican Church, who called the slain monk "one of the best-loved
Christian leaders of our time."

An all-night prayer vigil was held following the fatal attack
Tuesday night in the church at Taize, in Burgundy.

A Romanian woman wielding a knife killed silver-haired Brother
Roger, witnesses said. A community spokesman, Brother Emile, said
the monk's throat was cut and he died 15 minutes later.

Taize officials said the woman had arrived two days earlier among
thousands of pilgrims who visit the site. Prosecutor Jean-Louis
Coste said the woman, reportedly 36 years old, had bought the knife
the day before.

"It would appear for now there is little doubt that this was
premeditated since she bought a knife the day before and voluntary
homicide is manifest," Coste told reporters without naming the
woman.

Coste said the woman detained for questioning by police., He said
she was not "unbalanced enough to justify psychiatric care."

People at the service grabbed the woman, who had sprung from the
crowd, and turned her over to police.

Brother Roger founded the Taize religious community in 1940
emphasizing the need for all Christians to come together in peace,
love and reconciliation. The Taize ecumenical community, which is
near Macon, 240 miles southeast of Paris, draws tens of thousands of
Christian youths from around the world each year for prayer and
meditation.

Pope Benedict XVI said he had received a "very moving and very
friendly letter" just Tuesday from Brother Roger. Benedict spoke of
the "very sad and terrifying news."

"This is an indescribable shock," said Archbishop of Canterbury
Rowan Williams, spiritual leader of the Church of England. "Brother
Roger was one of the best-loved Christian leaders of our time and
hundreds of thousands will be feeling his loss very personally, and
remembering him in prayer and gratitude."

President Jacques Chirac praised Brother Roger as "one of the most
remarkable servants of the values of respect and tolerance," while
German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder said he regarded Brother Roger
as one of the "great contemporary personalities of religious life."

Schroeder praised him for sheltering Jewish refugees during World
War II and later fostering reconciliation in Europe.

Hawaiians uniting in anger

By Gordon Y.K. Pang
Advertiser Staff Writer

An appeals court ruling that sent a shock wave
through one of Hawai'i's oldest and most
influential institutions has also galvanized an
often-fractured Native Hawaiian community.

Across the islands, Hawaiians, many of whom
disagree on sovereignty and other hot-button
issues, poured out their frustration and prepared
to come together this weekend in support of
Kamehameha Schools.

Kumu hula Manu Boyd, a Kamehameha alumnus,
likened the situation to a family crisis that
brings together siblings who may not have spoken
in years.

"It's family loyalty, coming together now,
standing up for our ancestors," said Boyd.

Tuesday's decision by the 9th U.S. Circuit Court
of Appeals struck down as "unlawful race
discrimination" Kamehameha Schools' century-old
admissions policy giving preference to Hawaiians.

Yesterday, angry listeners jammed the telephone
lines of Hawaiian radio stations during morning
drive time to express their outrage.

The flood of calls was only one sign. In Hilo,
more than 100 alumni and others rallied in
support of the school to the sound of blaring
horns from passing traffic. Everywhere, plans
were being made for rallies and marches,
including one at 'Iolani Palace on Saturday that
is expected to draw thousands.

"They're tired of being mistreated, tired of not
being recognized as a people, tired of all our
benefits eroding," said Toni Lee, a Kamehameha
graduate and president of the Association of
Hawaiian Civic Clubs. "We've had about enough.
And if nothing else, maybe this is what we need
as a people to band together."

Meanwhile, the school's trustees reiterated that
they firmly believe in its admissions policies
and pressed on with a request for a wider hearing
of the case by the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of
Appeals.

Yesterday morning the phone lines lighted up at
KCCN FM 100 and Hawaiian 105 KINE radio. "We got
a ton of calls, and most of the calls were people
calling it unfair," said David Daniels, program
director for both stations.

He estimated that each station got at least 50 calls.

While some callers said they believe that the
appellate decision makes sense, roughly 95
percent backed the school's admissions policy, he
said.

The marshaling of forces actually began earlier.

On Tuesday less than six hours after the decision
was made public, more than 100 supporters of the
school had gathered in the courtyard of
Kawaiaha'o Plaza, Kamehameha's administrative
headquarters in Kaka'ako.

Among the assembled were representatives of
organizations both for and against the Akaka
bill, which would grant federal recognition to
Native Hawaiians. There were also groups that
criticized the school when it quietly admitted a
non-Hawaiian student in 2003 and even
organizations that have been chronic critics of
the school's policies.

They will gather again - only in much larger
numbers - on Saturday morning at 'Iolani Palace
when those objecting to the court decision will
rally and prepare for a march to Mauna 'Ala, the
Royal Mausoleum. Princess Bernice Pauahi Bishop,
who founded the school, is buried there.

Among those who will be at the rally is Andre
Perez, a leader in the Hui Pu umbrella
organization of groups opposed to the Akaka bill.

Perez, who did not attend Kamehameha, believes
strongly that the school's admissions policy
needs to be overhauled to meet the needs of
Native Hawaiians students who are struggling with
their grades.

"We are hoping for change within Kamehameha
Schools," Perez said. "Despite that, I think it's
important to stand together. We put our
differences aside and stand together for the
greater good of our keiki's future."

Boyd said the decision was only the latest in a
series of defeats suffered by the Native Hawaiian
community in recent years.

"We have so many people out there who would like
to see Hawaiians pretty much lose it all," said
Boyd, who also serves as public information
officer for the Office of Hawaiian Affairs.
Hawaiians are beginning to become aware of this,
he said. "I think people are really going to rise
up."

Davianna McGregor, a professor of ethnic studies
at the University of Hawai'i at Manoa, said
Hawaiians will rally around Kamehameha because
"it goes to our birthright as Native Hawaiians."

The ali'i set up their trusts partly in
recognition that "the common people never got
their fair share" during the Great Mahele,
McGregor said. The ali'i also felt that the
influx of immigrants during the 1880s would mean
that Hawaiians would, henceforth, need to compete
for what once had been theirs exclusively, she
said.

Michael Chun, Kamehameha's president, said he
sees both Hawaiians and non-Hawaiians rallying
around the school.

Non-Hawaiians, he said, recognize that the school
is "an important institution that is serving a
disadvantaged group of people. They recognize
that when this disadvantaged group of people is
helped, the community is helped as well."

Native Hawaiian activist Keali'i Gora said this
weekend's rallies are just the tip of the iceberg.

He and others are preparing to "get more
aggressive and we're going to go into Waikiki,"
Gora said. "We're going to hit the economic
situation, we're going to hit them hard and we're
going to tell them leave, tell the tourists to
leave. Because we're not pleased with what's
going on."

http://www.diarioelpopular.com/Spa/Area1/xPopNewsDetails.asp?id=8537

SAINTHOOD EFFORT FOR 5 SLAIN RECALLS ARGENTINE `DIRTY WAR'
http://news.yahoo.com/news?

By Colin McMahon Tribune foreign correspondent
Fri Aug 12, 9:40 AM ET

For nearly 30 years, the faithful at St. Patrick's Church have
cherished the memory of five spiritual guides slain during
Argentina's "dirty war." The priests and parishioners at the Buenos
Aires church tend a small, understated shrine. And they nurture a
cause that goes beyond honoring the dead.

That cause, which once seemed impossible, now looks merely
improbable: to win canonization for the three Pallottine priests and
two seminarians slain at St. Patrick's on July 4, 1976.

The archbishop of Buenos Aires last week authorized the
beatification request to go forward, the first official step in the
Roman Catholic Church's long and complex process toward naming
someone a saint.

"The idea is not to generate hate or rancor, because from the very
first moment we have forgiven the killers, even if we do not know
who they are, even if we do not know their faces," said Rev. Adrian
Francioli of St. Patrick's, who is compiling the beatification
request on behalf of the Pallottine order. "The motive is to revive
faith in people, to kindle charity in the sense of brotherly
service, solidarity and commitment to those who have less."

The decision by Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio carries political as
well as spiritual significance.

Evidence and testimony will be collected to paint a portrait of the
men's religious lives. The Pallottines will ask that the five be
declared martyrs for the faith, and Bergoglio has ordered an
investigation into the attack itself, widely blamed on the military
regime that ruled Argentina from 1976 to 1983.

The Argentine church has acknowledged its failure to challenge the
military's anti-leftist repression, which according to human-rights
groups left 30,000 people dead or "disappeared," including dozens of
Catholic clergy and lay activists.

To the harshest critics, church leaders were not merely indifferent
to the violence but complicit in it. They say that includes
Bergoglio, 68, who led Argentina's Jesuits at the time. Such charges
were revived after the death of Pope John Paul II, when
Bergoglio was being mentioned as a possible successor.

Critics cite link to military

Writing in the Buenos Aires newspaper Pagina 12, leading journalist
Horacio Verbitsky said Bergoglio's "relations with the military
dictatorship three decades ago ... are a point against his chances"
of someday becoming pope. Verbitsky suggested the beatification
proposal was part of an attempt by Bergoglio "to whitewash his
personal history."

The timing of the decision is crucial. To comply with church rules,
the beatification process should begin within 30 years of a person's
death. In the case of Revs. Pedro Dufau, Alfredo Leaden and Alfredo
Kelly and seminarians Salvador Barbeito and Emilio Barletti, that
deadline comes next summer.

On the night they were slain, the United States was lavishly
celebrating its 200th birthday and Argentina was descending into an
agony of suspicion, violence and vengeance. The coup that brought
the military to power was 3 months old, and the first days of July
saw a terrifying spike in attacks by leftist guerrillas and
retribution by government and right-wing forces.

The priests and seminarians--or The Five, as they are known at St.
Patrick's--were home in their simple residence attached to the
church. By the time their assailants left in the early morning
hours, the five men had been gathered in the living room, riddled
with scores of bullets and heaped onto a rug.

Today that rug forms the backdrop for a simple shrine honoring The
Five. Next month, a monument with five granite pillars will be
dedicated.

The initial criminal investigation went nowhere. But witness
testimony and other evidence collected since the dictatorship lost
power in 1983 points to a team from the Naval Mechanics School in
Buenos Aires, a dirty war stronghold.

In his 1989 book on the slayings, "La Masacre de San Patricio,"
journalist Eduardo Kimel suggested four possible reasons for the
killing: revenge for guerrilla activity; the targeting of Barletti,
who though not a guerrilla fighter was connected to the main armed
revolutionary group; a vendetta by right-wing groups in the
neighborhood, or the silencing of Kelly, whose sermons condemning
the repression stung conservative and influential parishioners.

To Kimel, who was censured by the Argentine courts for his book's
critical portrayal of a judge in the case, "the killings enunciated
the objectives of state terror to destroy all organized popular
protests against the military dictatorship."

Church, society still divided

That it took three decades for the beatification petition to take
its first official step reflects the divisions within the Catholic
Church, and within Argentine society, over those dark years.

"Not everyone has recognized what happened as martyrdom," said
Sister Celia Scota, a Buenos Aires nun who went to St. Patrick's
last week for a mass to celebrate the opening of the beatification
process. "Some say it happened because they were mixed up in other
things. You still hear that today."

Sister Maria de los Angeles Puy said certain interests in the
church, in politics and business have "set up obstacles to the
discovery of the truth." But she was heartened by the name of a
street that runs by St. Patrick's Church. It has been
rechristened "Pallottine Martyrs."

"The church did not give that name, it was society, and that means a
lot," Puy said. "And saints they are too, even if they have yet to
be proclaimed that by the church."

El Salvador wants investments in the homeland

The Washington Post carries a story about efforts by El Salvador to
lure investment from Salvadorans who have emigrated to the US.
Although significant sums (totaling a sixth of El Salvador's economy)
come from emigrants sending money back to families, little money comes
back for investment:

Only about 10 percent of the more than 1 million Salvadorans
living abroad have any kind of business investment in their native
land, according to a study released last month by Georgetown
University's Institute for the Study of International Migration. The
report, led by political scientist Manuel Orozco, also found that 16
percent of Salvadoran immigrants have bank accounts in El Salvador,
and 10 percent are still paying off some form of debt in their native
country.

In comparison, nearly 70 percent of Salvadoran immigrants
regularly send money to family members in El Salvador. Last year,
Salvadorans living in the United States sent $2.5 billion to their
families, according to the Inter-American Development Bank. The money
that they send, known as remittances, is mostly used to buy food,
clothes and other consumer goods.

The government and business groups here are also encouraging
Salvadorans abroad to invest in property and businesses. El Salvador's
Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which tries to maintain ties with the
country's emigrants, is pushing for a government program that will
give incentives to Salvadorans living elsewhere to invest in
job-creating ventures.

Along with tourism projects, the government is promoting
investment in traditional agriculture, call centers and auto-parts
manufacturing.

===

Vicariato de Roma (plaza S. Giovanni in Laterano, 6–00184 Roma) todas

Street vendor troubles

For years, street vendors and authorities in San Salvador have been
engaged in conflict. The vendors, who set up shop to sell everything
from T-shirts to pupusas to illegally copied DVDs and much more, clog
the streets and sidewalks in central San Salvador. Their unsanctioned
stalls cause traffic congestion and irritate established merchants in
nearby buildings. This informal economy, however, represents a
livelihood, albeit a meager one, for hundreds or thousands of
Salvadorans.

From time to time, the authorities take action against the vendors,
primarily seeking to limit the locations where they can sell their
goods. The conflicts with authorities have recently flared up. During
the August festivals, street vendors blocked the progress of the
opening parade, the Desafile de Correos, with protests.

This week street vendors caused disturbances described in La Prensa
Grafica and El Diario de Hoy in the center of the city. Authorities
had dislodged vendors from their stalls along one street on Tuesday.
Vendors have protested, including setting fire to tires, rock
throwing, and barricading streets.

For a loyal ally

On August 10, the US announced that it will give $45 million over the
next 5 years for a program supporting basic health and education.
According to press reports, El Salvador's foreign minister stated that
the funds would support 100,000 students and 3000 teachers, primarily
in rural areas.

At the signing ceremony for agreement, the US ambassador thanked El
Salvador for its commitment to continue the presence of 380 troops in
Iraq.

Isn't that called a payoff?

Long life in El Salvador

La Prensa Grafica carried a story last week about Cruz Hernández, a
woman who may be the oldest living woman on earth. She lives in San
Agustín in Usulutan department. The Salvadoran registry of natural
persons has reportedly verified the age of Cruz Hernández as 127
years, born in 1878. According to La Prensa, Cruz Hernández worked
as a midwife until finally retiring at the age of 124. She has 178
descendants.

If true, Cruz Hernández would be more than a decade older than the
woman recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records as the oldest
living woman, 113 year old Hendrikje Van Andel-Schipper of the
Netherlands.

When asked the secret of her longevity, Cruz Hernández told the
paper that she does not bathe during the new moon. She advised that
her diet included drinking beer and eating meat.

The La Prensa report also states that the second-oldest Salvadoran is
120 years old, and that there are 151 Salvadoran centenarians.

PRODUCTION HAS BEGUN IN LITHUANIA ON "HAVE NO FEAR: THE LIFE OF POPE
JOHN PAUL II," FOR ABC
http://www.thefutoncritic.com/cgi/pr.cgi?id=20050805abc01

Released by ABC

Telefilm Will Star Thomas Kretschmann ("The Pianist") as the Pope, As
Well as Bruno Ganz ("Wings of Desire") and Joachim de Almeida ("24")

Emmy-nominated executive producers of the acclaimed telefilms "Jesus"
and "Nicholas' Gift," Lorenzo Minoli and Judd Parkin, have teamed
again to produce the original movie for television, "Have No Fear:
The Life of Pope John Paul II" (working title). Principal photography
has begun in Lithuania and will conclude in Rome, and the program
will air this season on the ABC Television Network. Thomas
Kretschmann ("The Pianist," "King Kong") will star as Pope John Paul
II, Bruno Ganz ("Wings of Desire") as Cardinal Wyszynski, the Primate
of Poland, and Joachim de Almeida ("24") portrays Salvadoran
Archbishop Oscar Romero, who was brutally murdered during the Pope's
reign.

In this dramatization, viewers will see, for the first time, not only
the spiritual leader's remarkable public life on the world stage, but
also the very intimate moments that epitomized his great humanity --
his passions, regrets, frustrations, triumphs and sorrows. Born in
1920 in Wadowice, Poland, Karol "Lolek" Wojtyla was a bright, deeply
faithful youth who loved theatre and school, but suffered the loss of
his parents and only sibling before he reached adulthood. During
World War II, he saw the deportation of Jewish childhood friends,
which had a lasting effect on him and shaped his views on Fascism and
anti-Semitism. In defiance of the German occupation, he staged his
own political plays while risking his life, secretly studying at
seminary. He was ordained a priest in 1946, and his great intellect
impressed his superiors; he was made a bishop in Poland at just 38
years old, the youngest bishop in the country. Cardinal Wyszynski
(portrayed by Bruno Ganz), the head of the Polish Church, was
initially skeptical of this young intellectual, but the man who would
become Pope proved to be Poland's strongest ally in the fight against
Communism and helped give rise to the Solidarity movement. Wojtyla
worked hand-in-hand with the beloved Cardinal throughout his life.

Wojtyla's ascendancy through the Church hierarchy was rapid. He
participated in Vatican II, rising to Archbishop, then Cardinal.
After the death of Pope John Paul I, who was only leader for 33 days,
he was elected to become Pope, the first ever from Poland and the
youngest appointed in over 100 years. A man of great intellectual and
physical vigor, he survived an assassination attempt and later met
with his attacker in prison, pardoning the man. The Pope championed
causes thought to be liberal and conservative -- asking forgiveness
for the Church's missteps through history, while upholding the
Church's traditional stances on the right to life, homosexuality and
the ordination of women. He traveled the world more than any of his
predecessors, preaching the faith and spreading a message of love to
millions at a time. During his last decade, he battled numerous
health issues and grappled with the sex scandals involving American
priests, all while ushering the Church into the New Millennium.

Thomas Kretschmann and Bruno Ganz were most recently seen in the
independent film "Downfall," which was nominated for an Oscar for
Best Foreign Film. In addition, Kretchsmann has a major role in the
upcoming feature film, "King Kong," which reunites him with his co-
star from "The Pianist," Adrien Brody.

"Have No Fear: The Life of Pope John Paul II" was written by Michael
Hirst ("Elizabeth") and Judd Parkin. Jeff Bleckner ("The Beach Boys:
An American Family," "Serving in Silence: The Margarethe Cammermeyer
Story") directs. The production company is Five Mile River Films.

ABC ROLLS ON POPE MOVIE
http://tv.zap2it.com/tveditorial/tve_main/1,1002,271%7C96755%7C1%
7C,00.html

(Friday, August 05 12:06 PM)

LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) The battle of the Pope John Paul II movies
is back on.
ABC, whose project has taken a back seat to CBS' planned four-hour
miniseries, has announced the start of filming on its version of the
late pontiff's life. "Have No Fear: The Life of Pope John Paul II" is
now shooting in Lithuania and will also film some scenes in Rome.

Thomas Kretschmann ("The Pianist," USA's "Frankenstein") will star
in "Have No Fear" as Pope John Paul. The film will also feature Bruno
Ganz ("Wings of Desire," "The Manchurian Candidate") as Cardinal
Wyszynski, head of the Catholic Church in Poland, and Joaquim de
Almeida ("24") as Salvadoran Bishop Oscar Romero, who was murdered
during John Paul II's tenure.

The story, written by Michael Hirst ("Elizabeth") and Judd Parkin ,
will chronicle Karol Wojtyla's life as a student at an underground
seminary in Nazi-occupied Poland, his rapid rise through the Catholic
Church hierarchy and his more than quarter century as pope, during
which he helped lead the fight against Communism in his home country.
ABC's project and CBS' "Pope John Paul II" -- which stars Ian Holm
("The Lord of the Rings") as the pope in his later years and Cary
Elwes ("Saw") as the younger Wojtyla -- will cover much of the same
ground, so getting on the air first may be key. Neither network has
set an airdate yet, but both could conceivably be ready to go by the
end of the year.

CBS was thought to have the lead in getting its miniseries in front
of viewers with the casting of Holm and Elwes. ABC's announcement of
production, though, throws that idea into question.

Emmy winner Jeff Bleckner ("Hill Street Blues," "The Beach Boys: An
American Family") will direct "Have No Fear." Parkin and Lorenzo
Minoli ("Jesus," "Nicholas' Gift") are executive producing.

http://www.celam.org/noticelam/noticias2005/agencias2/8251.htm

http://www.ilquotidiano.it/articoli/index.cfm?ida=41473

ASCOLI PICENO - Il 4 agosto verrà inaugurato un pannello
bassorilievo in ceramica di 28 metri quadrati realizzato dall'artista
faentino Goffredo Gaeta e fortemente voluto dal Vescovo Silvano
Montevecchi.

Giovedì sera interverranno all'inaugurazione, oltre al Vescovo
Silvano Montevecchi, il Card. Achille Silvestrini, Prefetto emerito

• Maria Goretti (+ 1902). Giovane di nobili ideali cristiani, vissuta
nell'Agro Pontino, a Nettuno.

• Dietrich Bonhoeffer (+ 1945). Pastore luterano, uno fra i massimi

Art in the countryside

The San Francisco Chronicle has a story about residents of the San
Francisco area who have been bringing art classes and opportunities to
rural areas of El Salvador where the civil war once waged fiercely.
Here is an excerpt:

[Events of the war] still color life in El Salvador, presenting
the Bay Area artists with a challenge on how to engage students with
their own history, and let art help them transcend it.

"People have never been given any means to express what happened
here," said Eicher. "Every once in awhile there is a little explosion
of warfare in their drawings. Not withstanding what happened here, we
brought techniques and materials to kids and teachers, and that's what
we are here for. But I'm much more interested in rooting it, in
getting a little bit deeper."

"Politics is the reducing of something that is far more complex,"
added Bernardi. "There are certain things that art can get that
politics cannot."

Another example of people-to-people relationships which can transcend
the politics of free trade agreements or the coalitions of the
willing.

LEYENDO LAS SEÑALES: LOS SEGUIDORES DE MONSEÑOR ROMERO EN ROMA ESTÁN
SONRIENDO

Por Cindy Wooden (traducción CXC)
Servicio Noticiero Católico
http://www.catholicnews.com/data/stories/cns/0504360.htm

Paglia había informado a
