Dear Friends,

Your calls, faxes, and emails have borne fruit! The Salvadoran
government, bowing to international pressure, has allowed all 13 of
the political prisoners captured on July 2nd go free while awaiting
trial. Thank you! As this saga continues, we will send you more updates.

ROMERO'S 90TH BIRTHDAY
Today, August 15th, we celebrate Monsignor Oscar Romero's 90th birthday.

He continues to inspire us at the Foundation for Self-Sufficiency and
thousands of people around the world. One of his greatest
legacies: Romero lived the saying "hate the sin, love the sinner" in
his daily life. As a prophet in a society rushing towards a civil
war, he experienced conflict and strife that makes our "Red State /
Blue State" divide look like child's play. Nonetheless, even as his
enemies threatened him and made plans to take his life, he turned the
other cheek. He continued to reach out to them, to appeal to their
good side, and to seek common ground.

Our friend Brad Andrews has written a compelling tribute to Romero,
which you'll find here:

AGRICULTURE UPDATE
Our partner in El Salvador, the Coordinadora, continues to help
dozens of families improve their quality of life through sustainable
agriculture. For an update on their Ag Center in Ciudad Romero, as
well as their other activities, please follow this link:

SHELL BALEK - FULL TIME DELEGATIONS COORDINATOR
We also want to let you know that Shell Balek has begun working with
us full-time as our Delegations Coordinator. In July she finished
her Masters in Sustainable Development from the School of
International Training in Brattleboro, Vermont. We're thrilled that
she has chosen to stay with us after completing a one-year internship
that has built a stronger Delegations Program. We look forward to
more great things as she and Anabella Mejia, our El Salvador
Representative, continue enriching the experience that more and more
groups have with us in El Salvador.

projects, just click here:
