Virginia's rich history reflects a toolmaking tradition by Native Americans
that dates back 10,000 years ago. Over these years, countless stone
toolmakers made literally millions and millions of artifacts, many of which
were left in fields, along streambeds, and at Indian habitation sites. While
numerous, these tools and implements (and sites) are not endless. These
tools followed specific designs and were used to perform specific tasks that
provide the daily livelihood for Virginia’s Native Americans.
Archaeologically, all these tools can be classified and a sample is
presented here.
