Alan Salazar and Julie Tumamait-Stenslie, Chumash storytellers will
share their culture’s traditions through story, song, and blessings.
The stories are woven into rock art images. Many of these stories have
been lost through time. We will hear some of those that remain. This
event is an ideal family event.

Alan Salazar and Julie Tumamait-Stenslie are well-known Chumash
storytellers. Mr. Salazar has been working with groups for over 25
years, sharing Chumash culture and beliefs. His Chumash name is Spirit
Hawk and he is of Chumash and Tatavian descent. He assisted with the
rebuilding of a seaworthy tomol, the traditional plank canoe that
sailed to the Channel Islands in 2001 and 2004. Ms. Tumamait-Stenslie
has served on California’s Native American Heritage Commission and as
a cultural resources consultant throughout Chumash territory along the
southern California coast. She is also working on learning and
preserving the Chumash language.

The Rock Paintings of Hueco Tanks
Deer Valley Rock Art Center
Phoenix, Arizona
Continues through September 2009
This exhibit showcases a stunning array of rock art photographs from
the Hueco Tanks State Historic Site near El Paso, Texas. The
photographer, Clay Martin, won the 1997 American Rock Art Research
Association’s Oliver Award for Excellence in Rock Art Photography for
this photo essay on Hueco Tanks. Martin’s nineteen photographs depict
some of the 3,000 pictographs found at Hueco Tanks. Several different
Native American groups created these rock paintings. They date as far
back as 6,000 B.C. In recent years, many of these pictographs have
been vandalized. Martin felt a sense of urgency to document the rock
art while it remains intact. His breathtaking photographs serve both
as a documentary record and as an artistic work. The photographs also
pay tribute to the original rock painters and allude to the ambiance
of the ancient setting.
