LOCAL GROUP HOLDING BENEFIT FOR CAUSE GAINING
INTERNATIONAL ATTENTION
Minneapolis, Minnesota, January 22, 2004—The local
group Solidaridad para Mujeres (Solidarity for Women)
will hold an all-ages, sliding fee, benefit fundraiser
on Thursday, February 12, 2004, at Joe's Garage, 1610
Harmon Place, Loring Park, Minneapolis, from 8:00pm
until 2:00am.

Solidaridad para Mujeres raises awareness of and
support for those affected by the 300-plus serial
murders of women in Juarez, Chihuahua State, Mexico
since 1993. In 1993, in anticipation of 1994's North
American Free Trade Agreemen(NAFTA), United States
corporations began to build factories on the Mexican
border, in order to profit from cheaper labor. Many of
the murdered women worked at these factories, called
maquiladoras.

The benefit will feature live local performers, a
silent auction and complimentary food. Performances
will include sets by spoken word artists Desdamona and
PaviElle; the bands Grace Darling and Running on
Empty; DJ Jen, host of KFAI radio's "Groove Garden";
and the Rhymesayers entertainment hip-hop group Los
Nativos.

Proceeds from the door will be donated to two Mexican
organizations—Justicia para Nuestras Hijas (Justice
for Our Daughters) and Integracion de Madres de Juarez
(Integration for the Mothers of Juarez)—which support
the families of the victims and work to solve and
cease the murders. The silent auction will offer
services and arts from local and Bay Area donors, and
will help send a member of Solidaridad Para Mujeres on
a delegation to Juarez in March.

There is a local tie-in to the murders in Juarez.
Bloomington resident Carol Kiecker's daughter, Cynthia
Kiecker, and son-in-law, Ulises Perzabal, were
unjustly scapegoated in one of the murders and
imprisoned. Kiecker has worked ceaselessly for their
release. The Juarez murders are gaining international
attention. Locally, a wide range of press outlets
have covered the story, including Profane Existence,
Pulse of the Twin Cities, La Prensa, The Minnesota
Women's Press and the Minneapolis Star Tribune. This
past Sunday's issue of the Minneapolis Star Tribune
featured a front page story on Kiecker's case and the
wider context of the Juarez murders.

We are pleased to celebrate this New Year at the Freight (see their website
to read about it's history) with two wonderful musicians that we have been
"jamming" with throughout 2003.

Jorge Mijangos, of Santa Barbara (originally from Chiapas, Mexico) is
founding member of Son del Pueblo and plays with Conjunto Jardin. He is a
master of the jarana (instrument of the guitar family, from Veracrúz) and
sung verse of Veracrúz as well as the tres (guitar of 3 sets of double,
metal strings) of Cuba.

Berkeley violinist Gerardo Moreno (originally from Puebla, Mexico) – is a
musician of the classical dimension, whose sensitivity, versatility, and
simple pleasure in doing so, allows him a successful cross-over into
traditional Mexican music.

We’ll be playing music from repertoire that we have been developing in this
past year, as well as that of our first 2 recordings: “Mexico” and “Puente a
la Mar”. Here is a description of several of the styles that we will
perform:

Canción Mexicana: song dating back to the turn of the 19th Century in
Mexico. Roots in the Mexican Countryside, European song and Cuban Trova.
Popular composers and arrangers of this genre were Manuel M. Ponce, Manuel
S. Acuña and Esparza Oteo

Canción Ranchera: Song of the countryside, el campo, in ¾ time. Considered
to be the music of the Mexican pueblo, the working class, the campesinos.

Son mexicano: Son from Mexico is an improvised expression of a region in 6/8
or alternating ¾ and 6/8 time. That expression is poetry, melody, rhythm
and zapateado (footwork). Some sones performed will be son huasteco (from
the Huasteca area of North East Mexico), son jarocho (from Veracrúz), and
son istmeño (from the isthmus of Tehuantepec, Oaxaca).

Trova tradicional cubana: Born in the eastern side of Cuba over 100 years
ago, trova cubana is a broad term that includes different popular song
styles, such as the habanera, punto, clave, guaracha, bambuco, bolero,
criolla and son. As it migrated from the countryside of the eastern
province to the urban Habana, trova steadily developed into professional
performance and the original small groups expanded to become trios,
quartets, sextets and septets. Composers, who were also interpreters, who
have influenced us are María Teresa Vera, Manuel Corona and Dúo Los
Compadres.

Son cubano: Part of the rubric of trova, son cubano is a dance genre in
duple meter, that can be performed by different ensembles, such as trios,
quartets, sextets, and septets. Classic sextet instrumentation generally
includes guitar, tres, bass, maraca, clave and bongó. The Septeto Nacional
de Ignacio Piñeiro and Septeto Habanero were two important interpreters of
son in the early 20th century.

Bolero: Born out of the trova tradition, the Cuban bolero met with enormous
success in México, where composers such as Agustín Lara, and much later
Álvaro Carrillo were responsible for the explosion and long-lasting
popularity of this “sentiment made rhythm”. The radio movement of the
1930's attracted foreign musicians and composers such as Puerto Ricans
Rafael Hernández and Pedro Flores, who bequeathed many song gems to the
genre. Cubans and many latinoamericanos in turn have adopted these “new”
boleros, in a way, completing a circular journey.

Of African origin, the marimbol or marimbula is a percussive bass instrument
found in Caribbean and Latin American countries, including Cuba, Haiti and
Mexico (Veracrúz). The marimbol is a wood box with a round sound hole cut in
the center of it. Across this hole, a number of metal strips, or "lengüetas"
are attached. These metal strips are tuned to different pitches, and are
plucked to produce a deep basslike sound. In Mexico, the marimbol can be
tuned to a scale in the key of C major, whereas in Cuba, the marímbula might
have three to four lenguetas whose use is more of rhythmic importance than
tonal accuracy.

WASHINGTON DC/LOS ANGELES, JAN. 24, 2004— Aprovechando la constante
expansión del mercado de consumo mexicano en los Estados Unidos (EE.UU.) y
México, se ha organizado una convención para enlazar a empresarios mexicanos
en busca de fondos con las instituciones financieras que ofrecen millones de
dólares para el fomento de empresas en ambos países.
La Convención Nacional de Mexicanos en el Exterior del 2004 que se efectuará
del 29 a 31 de enero en el Centro de Convenciones del MGM Grand Hotel y
Casino en Las Vegas, Nevada, también evaluará la propuesta de inmigración
del presidente estadounidense George W. Bush y tratará los temas de salud y
educación tanto como otros relevantes para los mexicanos de EE.UU. y del
sur de la frontera. Esta convención es un punto de convergencia para cientos
de líderes de comunidades mexicanas en más de 40 estados de la Union
Americana. Actualmente, los mexicanos y mexicoamericanos componen el grupo
étnico más numeroso en los EE.UU.

CONVENCION PROMUEVE INVERSION…
La Convención a generado gran interés de los empresarios, corporaciones,
instituciones financieras, líderes comunitarios y políticos de ambas
naciones debido al continuo crecimiento del poder político y económico de la
comunidad mexicana en EE.UU. Inclusive, el evento a llamado la atención de
las comunidades salvadorenas, ecuatorianas, nicaraguenses e indúes, de las
cuales líderes y legisladores han sido inspirados por el evento al cual
asistirán.

Entre los participantes de EE.UU. se incluye a la Casa Blanca, miembros del
Congreso y el Senado, la Oficina para la Administración de la Pequena
Empresa, la Cárama de Comercio US-México, la Oficina de Administración
General de Servicios, el Buró del Censo, el Departamento de Seguridad
Nacional y miembros de la Conferencia Hispana del Congreso.

Por parte de México participarán los gobernadores de Oaxaca, Jalisco,
Aguascalientes y Colima; representates de las secretarías de Economía,
Turismo y Relaciones Exteriores; diez miembros del Congreso y ocho el
Senado; representantes de agencias gubernamentales como Nacional Financiera
y la Secretaría de Desarrollo Social (SEDESOL) y el Instituto de Mexicanos
en el Exterior (IME).

De nivel internacional paraticiparán entidades como el Banco Mundial y la
Organización Internacional del Trabajo.
Las instituciones financieras y programas de inversión y desarrollo
presentes en el evento asistirán a los participantes a familiarizarse con
los trámites para solicitar ayuda en la creación de negocios y desarrollo
social, lo cual tiene un alcance de $50 millones de dólares.

De acuerdo al Buró del Censo de los Estados Unidos, los descendientes de
mexicanos constituyen el 67 porciento de la población hispana en este país,
lo cual representa más de 25 millones de personas en

más de 40 estados con un poder adquisitivo de más de $378 mil millones de
dólares anuales. Como el grupo latino más numeroso de la nación, los
mexicanos/mexicoamericanos tiene una poderosa fuerza económica en ambos

de $15 mil millones de dólares en remesas a México. Este segmento de la
población es una parte escencial de la gran economía de EE.UU. que ha
enriquecido el tejido social, la diversidad cultural y de lenguaje. El
espanol es el segundo idioma que más se habla en EE.UU.

Esta convención anual que organiza la Asociación Mundial de Mexicanos en el
Exterior (AMME –www.mexicanosenelexterior.com) con base en Los Angeles,
California, y oficinas en Washington DC, Dallas, Texas, y México D.F.
generará una agenda nacional para el 2004 que cubrirá temas de negocio,
educación, salud, seguridad nacional e inmigración. Además, evaluará los
avances desde la convención pasada que también se efectuó en Las Vegas.

un prominente mexicoamericano.

SAN JUAN BAUTISTA -- The hugely popular and critically acclaimed
American theatre classic, Zoot Suit by Luis Valdez, kicks-off its 25th
anniversary national tour in Gilroy, California.

El Teatro Campesino presents the hit play with music at the company’s
newly designated second space, ETC 2, at Gavilan College Main Theatre in
Gilroy for a limited run, March 19 through April 18, 2004. The
production previews March 17 and 18.

Zoot Suit recreates the fascinating time and place of World War II Los
Angeles with its imaginative portrayal of the Sleepy Lagoon murder
mystery and the infamous Zoot Suit Riots. Filled with passionate heart,
sly wit and infectious music, Zoot Suit brings together unforgettable
characters such as the irreverent El Pachuco and the charismatic Henry
Reyna, an unsuspecting gang leader who finds himself caught in the
middle of the racially turbulent events that rocked the city during the
early 1940s.

El Teatro Campesino first produced Zoot Suit’s new staging in October
2002 at the San Juan Bautista home base of playwright/director Valdez,
quickly adding three extensions to sold out audiences.

Zoot Suit made its world premiere in 1978 at the Mark Taper Forum where
it ran for an unprecedented twelve-weeks. Zoot Suit broke all attendance
records at the Taper and subsequently moved to the larger Aquarius
Theatre in Hollywood to accommodate audience demand. Coinciding with the
Hollywood run, this critically acclaimed production opened on Broadway
in 1979 and was adapted for the screen and released by Universal
Pictures in 1981.

Performances of Zoot Suit at ETC 2 at Gavilan College Main Theatre (5055
Santa Teresa Blvd., Gilroy) are scheduled Thursday through Saturday at 8
p.m., with matinees on Saturday at 2 p.m. and Sunday at 3 p.m.

January 23, 2004 Hau Kola, Hello my friends, my relatives: You can
never imagine the heartfelt comfort it brings to know you're not
forgotten in prison. This is my 28th year, and I've seen others come
and go and return again. I can't help but feel a great sorrow for many
of these young men who keep coming back for one reason or another; most
of which are alcohol related offenses. So much has changed since I came
here and yet, in many ways, it's still the same. The government, under
the pretext of security and progress, liberated us from our land,
resources, culture, dignity and future. They violated every treaty they
ever made with us. I use the word "liberated" loosely and
sarcastically, in the same vein that I view their use of the
words "collateral damage" when they kill innocent men, women, and
children. They describe people defending their homeland as terrorists,
savages and hostiles, and accuse us of being aggressors. We have never
fought a battle or war that was not on our own land; we never fired the
first shot ... ever. My words reach out to the non-Indian: Look now
before it's far too late - see what is being done to others in your
name and see what destruction you sanction when you say nothing. Your
own treaty, the one between yourselves and the government, is being
violated daily; this treaty is commonly known as the Constitution. With
us, they started a little at a time, encroaching on our rights until we
had none at all. It will be the same for the Constitution; this is not
conjecture, but fact. We are not embattled with the color of man, but
with the weakness of man, a mindset that lusts for power and wealth at
the expense of life. Men of all colors, cultures and religions must
stand together to oppose the genocidal policies that face us all as the
corporate world seeks to enslave all, and pit one nation against
another. If you avoid breaking laws and do what you're told and ignore
the poor, the oppressed and the downtrodden - you probably won't be
bothered. If you try to right what is wrong, however, you will surely
meet great opposition and run the risk of imprisonment or death. I am a
Sun Dancer. I took a vow for my people. I chose to seek the Creator's
will and to follow it to the best of my ability. I WILL NOT STAND DOWN
FROM THAT VOW. I will continue to speak, write and organize until
Grandfather himself quiets my life. If I can do this in prison, I have
no doubt you can do much better from where you stand. I encourage you
to do your best, be kind to one another, seek harmony and balance with
all natural life, enjoy what freedom you have left, and most of all,
