Free and Open Source Movements Part 1 - History and Philosophies
This article reviews the development and need for Free and Open Source
movements in software development. Part 1 provides a global overview of
climates and conditions that fostered the revolution. The climate in
software development in 1984 is being mimicked in education today -
closing doors, content as individual property, proprietary offerings,
and for-profit challenges to the education environment. Part 2 calls for
a similar revolution in the field of educational content and will
announce the formation of an organization committed to fostering Open
Source content development.

Open Source Content in Education: Part 2 - Developing, sharing,
expanding resources by George Siemens
This is the second article (Part 1: Free and Open Source Movements
explores the history and philosophy of the openness and sharing of
resources in software development) on the role of open source in
education. The foundation of the article was shaped by a several week
email dialogue with Stephen Downes. The essential concept presented: we
need open access and sharing of educational materials to provide an
alternative to increasing pressures of proprietary content providers.

Why We Should Share Learning Resources:
Educational resource sharing is emerging as a viable means to improve
the quality of and access to education. To foster sharing, Open
Education functions from these principles (1): Foundational principle of
progress: Ideas build on other ideas; To preserve this foundation, we
need to promote the following freedoms for learning material: Freedom to
use for any purpose.
Freedom to improve and extend. Freedom to build on and make new.
