"Voices of the New Library Professionals"

2007 sees Library Review celebrate its 80th anniversary. Part of the
celebrations will encompass publications from the archives of the journal
discussing different aspects of librarianship through the years the journal
has been published. In the final issue of the anniversary year it is our
intention to publish a selection of papers from students of library and
information science from around the world. The topics of the articles can
be on any aspect of modern librarianship, but what we are looking for is
writing that discusses librarianship and your views on its future as the
professionals who will be the backbone of the profession for the coming
decades. Topics can include, but are not limited to:

. Hybrid and digital libraries
. Information literacy and e-learning
. Metadata and distributed searching
. Library collaboration and resource sharing

Welcome to the 12th International Symposium for Health
Information Management Research (ISHIMR 2007). This year's
theme is "From Research to Development to Implementation:
Challenges in Health Informatics and Health Information
Management." Hosted by the University of Sheffield, ISHIMR 2007
brings together people who are carrying out, or are interested in,
research and progress in health information management and health
informatics. ISHIMR 2007 provides a forum for the presentation and
discussion of research activities in health information management
and health informatics.

ISHIMR 2007 is a response to identifying opportunities and
challenges regarding the application of modern information
management and informatics technology to provide technology-
mediated solutions to healthcare practice and delivery issues faced
by all stakeholders--i.e. healthcare professionals, managers,
planners, patients and the public.

The multi-disciplinary field of healthcare is a massive generator and
user of information and knowledge. Effective management and
exploitation of this critical resource is fundamental to the
effectiveness of all groups and individuals in this field, at strategic,
management and operational levels. We therefore welcome paper
submissions and delegates from the international healthcare
community, particularly those with teaching/research
responsibilities in health information management and health
informatics, with clinical responsibilities, and those involved in
provision of information and knowledge services.

The conference spans three days, and is an excellent opportunity
for you to meet other health information academics and
professionals from all over the world, creating an opportunity for
networking, collaboration, and international knowledge sharing.
A centre for excellence in health information management, the
University of Sheffield is located in the heart of England, where you'll
find the beauty of the nearby Peak District National Park, a vibrant

"Library 2.0 Initiatives in Academic Libraries"

Library 2.0 is a response to the revolution in the way library users
create, edit, seek, use, organize and share information. Many observers
agree on several guiding principles of Library 2.0. These include the
use of social information tools favored by users; building personalized,
participatory library services driven by user needs; an embrace of
radical trust; taking the library to users; and rapid change mobilized
by assessment.

Academic libraries are spearheading Library 2.0 innovations, but many
libraries remain out of the loop. "Library 2.0 Initiatives in Academic
Libraries" will be a hybrid book and post-publication wiki presenting
case studies of Library 2.0 initiatives and will serve as a guide to
action. It is the first professional library publication of its type.

"Library 2.0 Initiatives in Academic Libraries" will consist of case
study chapters on a range of significant Library 2.0 initiatives taking
place in academic libraries throughout the world. Following its
publication, the authors will maintain follow-up reports on a wiki that
will track the subsequent evolution of their initiatives. These reports
can be tracked on the wiki site or by RSS feed.

The book and wiki will be published by the Association of College &
Research Libraries.

Recommended topics: Acceptable topics cover a range of significant
initiatives that embody the guiding principles of Library 2.0. Topics
may cover functional beta initiatives.

and plans for its future development. Proposals should include a
statement that the author(s) agree to maintain periodic project updates
on the post-publication wiki for a period of at least two years
following publication of the book.

notified about the status of your submission by April 1, 2007. Following
acceptance of proposals, authors will have three months to prepare

LA-Web 2007 is the fifth of a series of refereed conferences aimed at
providing
a venue in Latin America for researchers and technologists from around the

to present, demonstrate and discuss the latest Web developments.

Previous editions of LA-Web have taken place in Santiago, Chile (2003), São
Paulo, Brazil (2004), and Buenos Aires, Argentina (2005), and Cholula,
Mexico
(2006). LA-Web 2007 will be held in Santiago de Chile.

LA-WEB 2007 is endorsed by the IW3C2 International World Wide Web Conference
Committee and its proceedings will be published by the IEEE Computer Society
Press. This year, the first day of LA-WEB will hold joint-sessions along

SPIRE 2007.

--Background and Significance--
Recent widespread availability of educational resources on the World-
Wide Web holds great potential for transforming education. In science
education, for example, students can now access real-time images from
space exploration. They can also download data and partner with other
students and scientists to analyze simulations of complex weather
events. In mathematics, students can interact with virtual tools and
manipulatives that help make abstract concepts more concrete. Across
all disciplines, teachers can effectively and efficiently tailor
instructional activities to meet curriculum standards and the unique
interests and educational needs of their students. In short, through
interacting with Web content, students can now engage in highly
personalized learning experiences, instead of relying on a one-size-
fits-all textbook.

In recognition of this potential, several large-scale initiatives are
developing digital libraries containing catalogued online learning
resources (or, learning objects), including:
* the United States' National Science Digital Library (htttp://
nsdl.org);

* the Australian Le@rning Federation (http://
www.thelearningfederation.edu.au);

* the European Union’s Ariadne Foundation (http://www.ariadne-eu.org/);

* EduSource Canada (http://www.edusource.ca).


Key objectives of the initiatives are to provide teacher and learner
access to high-quality learning objects in order to help improve the
effectiveness and efficiency of education at all levels and across
all disciplines. Emerging research issues include: collecting and
assessing high-quality learning objects of varying levels of
granularity; cataloging to facilitate effective information retrieval
by non-specialist audiences; services and tools that support the use
and re-use of learning objects; systems interoperability; and, policy
issues associated with integrating technical systems into existing
social and educational systems. As such, these initiatives are
concerned with many of the same research issues that the
international digital library community has been grappling with for
the past decade.

The purpose of this special issue is to critically examine the role
that digital libraries can and should play in education. Papers are
invited on the technical, social, and policy dimensions of digital
libraries for education. Topics to be considered include, but are not
limited to:

* The design, use, evaluation, and sustainability of innovative
digital library technologies in education;
* Critical examinations of educational practices using these
technologies;
* Interdisciplinary aspects; international cooperation;
* Metadata frameworks for education;
* Knowledge organization systems and subject access for education;
e.g., thesauri, ontologies, and other terminologies;
* Quality issues related to learning resources;
* Indexing, retrieval, and discovery of resources and data for
education;
* Digital curation, provenance, repository, privacy, and preservation
issues associated with digital libraries for education;
* Teacher/Learner needs and user interfaces for creating, managing,
customizing, annotating, and collaborating;
* Accessibility of and to technologies by diverse teacher / learner
communities

Due to the emerging nature of this field, we welcome a broad variety

Knowledge management has been called everything from innovative and
crucial to new wine in old bottles and dead. Usually, different perceptions
spring from different perspectives. The aim of I-KNOW is to bring a broad
array of these perspectives together, to learn from each other and to
jointly find promising ways ahead for the future.
In 2007, this will be reflected by putting special emphasis on discovering
and comprehensively managing knowledge relationships, and on service-based
knowledge management solutions.

Now in its seventh year, I-KNOW has a tradition of bringing together
Europe´s leading researchers and practitioners involved in knowledge
management Attracting more than 500 attendees, I-KNOW is the premier
conference on knowledge management in Europe. I-KNOW provides a perfect
opportunity to stay abreast of the latest developments in the field. Both
the human/organizational perspective and the technology perspective are
covered. The novelty and the quality of the accepted contributions are
ensured by a high-calibre program committee featuring international experts
on a broad range of knowledge management topics.

Beginning in 2007, I-KNOW will be complemented by I-MEDIA

This special issue will discuss the challenges of designing for uncertainty – that is creating information systems that facilitate working with uncertainty rather than simply assuming that we should eliminate it. This call for a different approach to design is based on the premise that (in certain situations) uncertainty can be a powerful mediating strategy for people.  Most current systems appear based on an underlying assumption that uncertainty needs to be reduced or avoided altogether. New systems are needed that place uncertainty in a more positive light than is possible at present.

Uncertainty is a persistent characteristic and, from the user’s perspective, is a natural experience within the process of information seeking and meaning making. Many discussions of uncertainty in information seeking relate to the negative feelings associated with the experience of uncertainty. It is described as part of a struggle and a situation in which a person experiences anxiety and a lack of confidence. However, studies exploring experts in the workplace have also demonstrated that uncertainty is not always perceived as agonizing and frustrating. Instead, in certain situations, some searchers experience a sense of motivation and interest rather than frustration or anxiety. Portraying uncertainty as a natural part of a searcher’s experience represents a significant shift by accommodating uncertainty rather than reducing it. The focus turns to the perception of uncertainty in any given situation, rather than any inherent certainty or uncertainty.

Given increased demands for effective searcher support in this digital age, realization continues to grow that the ambiguities, doubts and non-determinability of the “uncertain” conditions of human existence allow new ideas to arise. Researchers are becoming increasingly interested in examining the role these positive forms of uncertainty may play for creativity and innovation. There is growing interest in understanding how to support innovation in the design and implementation of information systems.

While many researchers have acknowledged uncertainty can have positive effects, there is very little research detailing these positive impacts and analyzing the potential interplay between “positive” and “negative” experiences of uncertainty. Papers are sought for this special issue that might contribute rich descriptions of the complexity of uncertainty by drawing on empirical research and theoretical examination of searcher-system relations and human evaluative processes of information. This special issue is particularly interested in understandings that can be drawn from theoretical and empirical work when uncertainty is embraced as an important and natural component in human experience.

Submissions==

Submissions for the special topic issue should be high-quality manuscripts on the theoretical, empirical and methodological issues surrounding this topic. Contributions are invited that examine uncertainty from different angles. Selected papers would ideally invite readers to consider the implications for the design and use of information systems if we recognize uncertainty’s potential as a powerful mediating strategy for information seeking and use. Papers should be of a concrete experimental or theoretical nature pertaining to such design. Discussions of tests performed on pilot design implementations are also invited. Submissions should describe original research and not be under consideration in any other forum. All submissions should be formatted according to the Information Processing & Management guidelines for papers, references, and citations (see “Guide for Authors” at http://authors.elsevier.com/GuideForAuthors.html?PubID=244&dc=GFA) but should be submitted in electronic form to the guest editors listed below. Submitted articles will be reviewed according to the Information Processing & Management reviewing criteria and appropriateness to the special topic issue.

Questions of particular interest to consider include:

*What is the role of uncertainty in learning and work contexts?                                                  

*What is the relationship between uncertainty and different phases of the search process; and how does this suggest different types of interventions?

*How might intermediaries and system designers identify situations where uncertainty should be supported?
