NOVA-Newsletter Nr. 1/2009 (March) Dear NOVA-Pilots and Friends, This is the first NOVA Newsletter in 2009 and we have plenty of interesting news for you. Here are the topics:: Wings             TRITON – new serial class high performance paraglider Video              Acro – Raul Rodriguez People             The Red Baron – Claus Vischer Scene             Accuracy Flying Pilots Wear     New SOFTSHELL and pilots suit  EXPERT Pilots Team     2009 Team / Team Meeting Lijak Juniors Team   Webpages Online / Wings in Team-Design / Sebastian Benz Down Under Wings    NOVA TRITON – New Serial Class High Performance Paraglider EN D (C) Regular visitors to the NOVA website have long since noticed that our new serial class performance wing TRITON is already certified in three sizes (20, 22, and 24 – 18 will follow soon). With TRITON, we have focussed on “tapping the full potential of the wing“ – the same as with MENTOR (LTF 1–2 / EN B) and FACTOR (LTF 2 / EN C). What does that mean? It means that you enjoy plenty of confidence in your wing. That you simply feel in control and comfortable. That you dare use the speed bar even in stronger thermal (= turbulent) conditions and that you can direct yourself precisely to the strongest lift. It is a “tradition“ at NOVA that the measurable performance is at least very good (L/D, polar, maximum speed). The TRITON offers this too, of course, but it also excels with beautifully agile and direct handling; without being nervous. We dare to say, it offers a level of “flying fun“ that has not been achieved in this category so far. Its dynamic and playful handling enables the pilot to achieve a very good climb – particularly in strong conditions. It also doesn’t show the tendency of “levering“, the feeling of being kicked out of a thermal. Concerning safety, the TRITON is positioned on the safe side of its category; it is a very stable wing. Especially the centre of the wing hardly collapses. Of course, collapses may and will occur in very turbulent conditions. Yet, the TRITON can be stabilised quite easily with a dosed brake input and the collapsed side reopens fast and smoothly. Almost all pilots who have flown it experienced a “good feeling“ after only a few minutes of flying. We have compiled a very comprehensive document about the TRITON. It is primarily addressed to paragliding instructors and schools. But why should be keep it as a secret. Have a look at it! Try it yourself! Video     ACRO – Raul Rodriguez As you know, there is cooperation between Acro-legend Raul Rodriguez and NOVA. Hannes Papesh designs the ‘Raul Rodriguez Acro Wings’ according to the demands of Raul, then Raul does all the testing and trimming, and finally the wings are manufactured in our own production plant in Hungary. Recently, Raul has made a pretty impressive video clip during testing of the first RADIX (which will be the acro comp wing). Looking at the video, one can – at least acro addicts can – see the potential for improvement on this wing. Since then, we have progressed a few generations. But looking at the video, we really admire Raul for handling this prototype with all its unpredictable – and sometimes unwanted – reactions. However, Raul’s skills and his determination to master this unknown and not yet complete wing are simply outstanding. Have a look at the clip on the start page of www.nova-wings. com (simply scroll down a bit) – but don’t get too dizzy! Currently, Raul is working on his next video, showing the latest and – hopefully – serial version of the RADIX. Besides, he is working on the AKIRA, which will be the Acro intermediate wing. Additionally, we are excited about the prototypes of the new “Easy Acro“ wing. This paraglider will target pilots who want a wing that opens the door into the world acro manoeuvres on the one side but is highly suitable for everyday flying. We will post it as soon as we have details. Until then, have look at Youtube http://www.youtube. com/watch? v=MJEzMkXyFwQ&fmt=18 People    The Red Baron – Claus Vischer Frequent visitors of the NOVA-website will have seen that paragliding instructor Claus Vischer has been mile-munching in Australia. The Aussies call him the Red Baron, because of his all-red NOVA FACTOR. Claus has already completed four flights with 200+ points in the DHV XC and is currently leading the 2009 ranking world-wide (please note: with LTF2 / EN C wing !). Commenting his flight from February 2nd he writes: “Blue thermals, partly extremely turbulent … Relaxing brake forces on FACTOR.“ On January 27th, he commented on a 212 point-flight: “Surprising! Due to an inflammation in my shoulder, I had to fly a lot with hands off the brakes. In spite of this and the fact that FACTOR is the most agile wing I flown so far, I have not experienced a single collapse!“ Please note that Claus is not a NOVA sponsored pilot, so he writes honestly what he thinks. Of course, we enjoy reading this as it summarizes what makes the FACTOR so special: Great performance and plenty of fun united with solid confidence! Scene    Accuracy Flying – Zoran Petrovic While we in the Central Alps mainly focus on XC flying and compete in the various Online Contests as well as classic competitions, Accuracy Flying is a pretty popular discipline in Eastern Europe and Asia. There is even an Accuracy World Cup (http://www.pgawc. org/) and our Serbian distributor Zoran Petrovic came in third in the overall ranking last year. Zoran won the final competition in Asagiri, Japan, and set a new record: after five flights, he was a mere 16 cm (C-E-N-T-I-M- E-T-E-R-S) away from the target point cumulated and 23 cm only after six rounds! Zoran flies a NOVA ROOKIE (low level LTF 1–2 / EN B), because of its precise handling, the late stall and its superb low speed properties. At the moment, he leads the FAI world ranking ( http://civlrankings .fai.org/ ?a=326&ladder_id=4 ) and says: “I will do my best to keep it that way for the next five years.” Pilots Wear    New Pilots Suit “EXPERT” – New SOFTSHELL Jacket We are proud to introduce our new pilots flying suit, the EXPERT. It was developed by our partner Charly Produkte, but it also comes in special NOVA design. I (Till Gottbrath, author of this newsletter, former editor-in-chief of the magazine “Outdoor” and very much a gear freak) used to think that paragliding wear does not match the quality and details of good outdoor clothing. Yet, the EXPERT shows me I was wrong:  It is really is a great piece of clothing! It features a technical cut, rock-solid performance fabrics and many useful details. By now, it consists of more than 50 pilots worldwide. Our website-maker Ingo Kallmeyer has updated the team pages and there you can also check out the new team members. On the NOVA website http://www.nova- wings.com/ english/welcome/ stories.html you can see images of our Team Meeting in Slovenia (Lijak) in February 2009. Among them is a squad of really good pilots, such as Peter Gebhard from South Tyrol (who made an amazing 247,25 km flight last year and is a member of the Italian national team), Micha Pohl (who came in 6th last season in sports class in XContest.org on his NOVA TYCOON), Stefanie Hudler (ranked in 9th last season in the worldwide ladies ranking of XContest.org on a Gradient Golden, and various more. One more thing about the NOVA Pilots Team: compared to many other teams, it is not a “bought squad” of competition pilots. It is a unique mix of different pilots and flying styles: XC pilots, the juniors, alpinists, photographers, “you-tubers”, and, of course, competition pilots. Also, we never actively recruited any team pilots. They all applied themselves. Selection criteria was not only on paragliding skills, but also their personality and attitude. NOVA Juniors Team    Pages Online – Team-Design Wings – Sebastian Benz Down Under We’ve already announced our Juniors Team in the last newsletter. Now, you can check out the crew on the team pages. Also, all the juniors each fly a wing in an exclusive orange-red-white design – they designed it themselves and we think they did it very, very well – with a name sticker on the bottom sail. On the pictures from the Pilots Team Meeting you can see wings in the Juniors-Design. Sebastian Benz, our Swiss Junior, took his FACTOR to Australia for three weeks and flew pretty successfully: currently, he is placed on the 2nd position of worldwide raking in the Sport class of XContest.org http://www.xcontest .org/world/ en/ranking- pg-sport/ This is his story from down under: “Australia was a great experience, although we were pretty unlucky with the weather conditions. Nevertheless, I made 40 hours and 800 km on my FACTOR!! It’s a fantastic wing to fly! I liked it straight away (my second thermal flight was more than 140 km).  Actually, I can confirm what the advertising says:  It is a Fun-FACTOR in deed! The only negative point is its slight tendency to roll when flying straight. Yet, this isn’t tragic. Besides, I would prefer a shorter brake travel, but I suppose this long travel results from the classification of the wing. I hardly did any acro manoeuvres, because Mount Borah is not very high. However, the FACTOR is a superb glider for wingovers. I was not able to produce nice SATs, there was always something flapping. Compared to all the competition wings, I didn’t really suffer from a performance disadvantage in the flatland. But that might be different in the Alps. Unfortunately, we could only fly one task at the XC-Open. I came in 10th Overall and 2nd in the sports class (only being beaten by a NOVA RA pilot). So, I can assure you, you will definitely be excited about your new FACTORs.” Other nice results: Our two south-tyrolean junior competition pilots Aaron Durogati and Peter Gebhard came in 2nd and 3rd on the first task of the Italian League flying their NOVA TRITON X. Contratulations! !
