Airport official: Missing jet probably crashed

NEW: Transport minister says distress signal picked up over central Sulawesi
• Adam Air passenger plane loses contact with flight controllers
• Boeing 737-400 was flying between Indonesia's Java and Sulawesi islands

JAKARTA, Indonesia -- An Indonesian passenger jet carrying about 100 people probably crashed, a military airport official said Monday, according to The Associated Press.

Rescue teams were searching for the Adam Air Boeing 737-400 aircraft that sent out a distress signal after it lost contact with flight controllers in bad weather between the islands of Java and Sulawesi.

Eddy Suyanto, military airport chief in South Sulawesi, told AP the type of signal indicated "a big chance it had an accident or a crash."  (ASI)

Earlier, Indonesia's Transport Minister Hatta Radjasa told El-Shinta radio the plane had been spotted above the Mamuju forest on Sulawesi.

"(It was) preliminary information from a plane flying above it. It will be the first clue for SAR (Search and Rescue) to move to the area.

"Let's hope it made an emergency landing," he said.

An official with Adam Air said the Boeing was carrying 96 passengers and six crew members.

Adam Air said it was setting up an information center for families of passengers.

The airline said the plane was heading to Manado on Sulawesi island. It had originated in Jakarta with a stopover in Surabaya, on Java Island.

A senior transport ministry official, Ichsan Tatang, told The Associated Press aviation authorities were investigating whether other flights might have picked up the plane's distress signal.

An Indonesian air traffic controller, Bhabr, told Metro TV the plane hit "very bad" weather and may have run out of fuel because, if still airborne, would be "over its (fuel) limit." Bhabr, like many Indonesians, uses only one name.

Adam Air is a privately owned low-cost airline that began operations in Indonesia several years ago. Most of its flights are domestic.

Last year, one of its jetliners lost all communication and navigation systems for four hours during a flight between the Indonesian capital Jakarta and Makassar on Sulawesi Island forcing the pilot to make an emergency landing.

Missing jet sent distress signal

JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) -- An Indonesian passenger plane carrying 102 people
lost contact with flight controllers Monday, and officials said it was still
missing more than six hours after its scheduled arrival.

Transport Minister Hatta Radjasa said a distress signal had been picked up
over central Sulawesi and rescue crews were on their way to search for survivors.

"Let's hope the plane had an emergency landing," he told El-Shinta radio.

A senior transport ministry official, Ichsan Tatang, said aviation
authorities were gathering information from other flights which "might have
picked up the plane's distress signal."

An Indonesian air traffic controller, Bhabr, told Metro TV the plane hit
"very bad" weather and may have run out of fuel because, if still airborne,
would be "over its (fuel) limit." Bhabr, like many Indonesians, uses only
one name.

The missing Adam Air flight was traveling between Indonesia's Java and
Sulawesi islands -- a two-hour trip -- carrying six crew and 96 passengers,
including 11 children, Indonesia's El-Shinta radio reported.

Adam Air, a privately owned low-cost airline, began operations in Indonesia
several years ago and most of its flights are domestic.

Last year, one of its jetliners lost all communication and navigation
systems for four hours during a flight between the Indonesian capital
Jakarta and Makassar on Sulawesi Island forcing the pilot to make an
emergency landing.

The transport minister said at the time he would investigate.

Contact lost with Indonesian jet

Contact has been lost with a passenger plane flying between the Indonesian
islands of Java and Sulawesi, aviation officials have said.
The Boeing 737-400 has 96 passengers and six crew on board.

The Adam Air plane reportedly left Surabaya in Java at 1300 local time (0600
GMT) on a two-hour flight to Manado in northern Sulawesi.

Transport Minister Hatta Radjasa said it had sent out a distress signal and
rescue teams had been sent to find it.

It was believed to be near Mamuju, in southern Sulawesi, 750km (466 miles)
south-west of its destination, but may have come down in the sea.

Severe storms

It was not clear why contact was lost, and there was no information as yet
on the condition of the plane or its passengers, Mr Radjasa said.

Contact was lost at 35,000ft, when the plane was an hour away from its
destination, a ministry official added.

An air traffic controller told local TV the aircraft had hit "very bad"
weather and would have run out of fuel if it had not already landed.

The area has been subjected to high winds and severe storms in the last few
days. About 400 people are still missing after a passenger ship sank off
Java on Saturday morning.

The BBC's Lucy Williamson in Jakarta says Indonesia has a chequered flight
safety record including several major crashes.

Last year near 150 people were killed when a plane crashed into a busy road
shortly after taking off from Medan on the island of Sumatra.

Adam Air, a privately owned low-cost airline based in Jakarta, began
operations in 2003.
