- UNEP Tunza Global Youth Gathering (GYG)
The 2009 Global Youth Gathering took place in Nairobi from 11-13 February, right before the 25th regular session of UNEP Governing Council/Global Ministerial Environment Forum (GC/GMEF). The GYG brought together 20 active environmental youth leaders from around the world, including the Tunza Youth Advisory Council and regional and indigenous representatives. The participants increased their knowledge on the role of youth in environmental governance, and developed a youth statement on the
environment that they presented to the GC/GMEF. The 2nd Tunza Strategy for 2009-2014 was adopted in the GC/GMEF, and the youth leaders suggested ways for its implementation that will strengthen UNEP's work with young people. More information and documentation of the GYG can be found at http://www.unep.org/tunza/youth/Conferences_Events/GYG_2009.asp.

-------------------- Asunto: from 350.org: This is an invitation to help build a movement--to take one day and use it to stop theclimate crisis.
Dear World,
This is an invitation to help build a movement--to take one day day and use it to stop the climate crisis.
On October 24, we will stand together as one planet and call for a fair global climate treaty. United by a common call to action, we'll make it clear: the world needs an international plan that meets the latest science and gets us back to safety.
This movement has just begun, and it needs your help.
Here's the plan: we're asking you, and people in every
country on earth, to organize an action in their community on October 24.
There are no limits here--imagine bike rides, rallies, concerts, hikes, festivals, tree-plantings, protests, and more. Imagine your action linking up with thousands of others around the globe. Imagine the world waking up.
If we can pull it off, we'll send a powerful message on October 24: the world needs the climate solutions that science and justice demand.
It's often said that the only thing preventing us from tackling the climate crisis quickly and equitably is a lack of political will. Well, the only thing that can create that political will is a unified global movement--and no one is going to build that movement for us. It's up to regular people all over the world. That's you.
So register an event in your community for October 24, and then enlist the help of your friends. Get together with your co-workers or your local
environmental group or human rights campaign, your church or synagogue or mosque or temple; enlist bike riders and local farmers and young people. All over the planet we'll start to organize ourselves.
With your help, there will be an event at every iconic place on the planet on October 24-from America's Great Lakes to Australia's Great Barrier Reef--and also in all the places that matter to you in your daily lives: a beach or park or village green or town hall.
If there was ever a time for you to get involved, it's right now. There are two reasons this year is so crucial.
The first is that the science of climate change is getting darker by the day. The Arctic is melting away with astonishing speed, decades ahead of schedule. Everything on the planet seems to be melting or burning, rising or parched.
And we now now have a number to express our peril: 350.
NASA's James Hansen and a team of
other scientists recently published a series of papers showing that we need to cut the amount of carbon in the atmosphere from its current 387 parts per million to 350 or less if we wish to "maintain a planet similar to that on which civilization developed."
No one knew that number a year ago-but now it's clear that 350 might well be the most important number for the future of the planet, a north star to guide our efforts as we remake the world. If we can swiftly get the planet on track to get to 350, we can still avert the worst effects of climate change.
The second reason 2009 is so important is that the political opportunity to influence our governments has never been greater. The world's leaders will meet in Copenhagen this December to craft a new global treaty on cutting carbon emissions.
If that meeting were held now, it would produce a treaty would be woefully inadequate. In fact, it would lock
us into a future where we'd never get back to 350 parts per million-where the rise of the sea would accelerate, where rainfall patterns would start to shift and deserts to grow. A future where first the poorest people, and then all of us, and then all the people that come after us, would find the only planet we have damaged and degraded.
October 24 comes six weeks before those crucial UN meetings in Copenhagen. If we all do our job, every nation will know the question they'll be asked when they put forth a plan: will this get the planet back on the path to 350?
This will only work with the help of a global movement-and it's starting to bubble up everywhere. Farmers in Cameroon, students in China, even World Cup skiers have already helped spread the word about 350. Churches have rung their bells 350 times; Buddhist monks have formed a huge 350 with their bodies against the backdrop of Himalayas. 350
translates across every boundary of language and culture. It's clear and direct, cutting through the static and it lays down a firm scientific line.
On October 24, we'll all stand behind 350--a universal symbol of climate safety and of the world we need to create. And at the end of the day, we'll all upload photos from our events to the 350.org website and send these pictures around the world. This cascade of images will drive climate change into the public debate--and hold our leaders accountable to a unified global citizenry.
We need your help-the world is a big place and our team is small. Our crew at 350.org will do everything we can to support you, providing templates for banners and press releases, resources to spread the word, and tools to help you build a strong local climate action group. And our core team is always just a phone call or e-mail away if you need some support.
This is like a
final exam for human beings. Can we muster the courage, the commitment, and the creativity to set this earth on a steady course before it's too late? October 24 will be the joyful, powerful day when we prove it's possible.
Please join us and register your local event today.

This year, Earth Hour has been transformed into the world´s first global election, between Earth and global warming.
For the first time in history, people of all ages, nationalities, race and background have the opportunity to use their light switch as their vote - Switching off your lights is a vote for Earth, or leaving them on is a vote for global warming. WWF are urging the world to VOTE EARTH and reach the target of 1 billion votes, which will be presented to world leaders at the Global Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen 2009.
This meeting will determine official government policies to take action against global warming, which will replace the Kyoto Protocol. It is the chance for the people of the world to make their voice heard.
Earth Hour began in Sydney in 2007, when 2.2 million homes and businesses switched off their lights for one hour. In
2008 the message had grown into a global sustainability movement, with 50 million people switching off their lights. Global landmarks such as the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, Rome´s Colosseum, the Sydney Opera House and the Coca Cola billboard in Times Square all stood in darkness.
In 2009, Earth Hour is being taken to the next level, with the goal of 1 billion people switching off their lights as part of a global vote. Unlike any election in history, it is not about what country you´re from, but instead, what planet you´re from. VOTE EARTH is a global call to action for every individual, every business, and every community. A call to stand up and take control over the future of our planet. Over 74 countries and territories have pledged their support to VOTE EARTH during Earth Hour 2009, and this number is growing everyday.
We all have a vote, and every single vote counts. Together we can take control of the future of our
planet, for future generations.
VOTE EARTH by simply switching off your lights for one hour, and join the world for Earth Hour.
World Environment Day (WED) was established by the UN General Assembly in 1972 to mark the opening of the Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment.
Commemorated yearly on 5 June, WED is one of the principal vehicles through which the United Nations stimulates worldwide awareness of the environment and enhances political attention and action. The day's agenda is to:
1. Give a human face to environmental issues; 2. Empower people to become active agents of sustainable and equitable development; 3. Promote an understanding that communities are pivotal to changing attitudes towards environmental issues; 4. Advocate partnership which will ensure all nations and peoples enjoy a safer and more prosperous future.
The theme for WED 2009 is
'Your Planet Needs You-UNite to Combat Climate Change'. It reflects the urgency for nations to agree on a new deal at the crucial climate convention meeting in Copenhagen some 180 days later in the year, and the links with overcoming poverty and improved management of forests.
This year's host is Mexico which reflects the growing role of the Latin American country in the fight against climate change, including its growing participation in the carbon markets.
Mexico is also a leading partner in UNEP's Billion Tree Campaign. The country, with the support of its President and people, has spearheaded the pledging and planting of some 25 per cent of the trees under the campaign. Accounting for around 1.5 per cent of global greenhouse gas emissions, the country is demonstrating its commitment to climate change on several fronts.
Mexican President Felipe Calderon states that the WED celebration will "further underline Mexico's
determination to manage natural resources. .and deal with the most demanding challenge of the 21st century - climate change."

Join 350, a global movement to solve climate crisis
Hello!
You're receiving this e-mail because I thought you would want to join in something important to solve the climate crisis.
All around the world communities are taking action to spread the number 350, the safe level of CO2 in the atmosphere measured in parts per million, and make sure world leaders are on course to reach that target.
Sounds weird right? Well, there's an animation that explains everything in just 90 seconds. Check it out here: http://www.350. org/animation.
It's urgent that we act together and build a movement that will solve the climate crisis and ensure a safe and just future for the world.
Please join us, and help build this movement at 350.org.
Share ideas and have your voice heard! Take your part in the World Water Youth Forum!
All the way through ages, water-related problems have been one of the greatest challenges facing humanity. Following a UN survey on the important issues for the 21st century water ranks second. Following this premise, it can be said that prospects for human development are endangered by an intensified global water crisis.
The 5th World Water Forum thus aims to bring more to the world than merely ideas and debate amongst water experts; it aims to bring the world to Istanbul to improve our understanding of divergent points of view and allow us to share solutions.
Taking action is manifold. Every segment of society is responsible for the effective management of water issues. Inspired by the idea that youth should be accepted as partners for development, helping to chart a united course and shaping the expectations for everyone, many students and
young water professionals are vying for being representatives of water awareness. Young people that are either affiliated with NGOs or student clubs or not tied to any organization or company, have creative ideas and are ready for making a difference. Thus in order to intone a strong voice in the water issues, active participation of youth is crucial. It is crucial that YOU(TH) participate!
If you have suggestions, ideas, knowledge, products or strategies related, then don't lose the opportunity to tell the world! You are welcome to participate. Come to share the experience with a diverse worldwide community of experts and politicians.
Should you have any questions or comments regarding the upcoming WWYF, please feel free to contact us. We look forward to seeing you in Istanbul and your participation. To find out more about registeration please visit our web site:

UN-HABITAT Global Survey
Participate in UN HABITAT’s Global Survey
As part of a strategy review to assess how best to continue to support its partners and enable them to achieve key objectives, UN-HABITAT is collaborating with IHS to launch a world-wide survey.
The purpose of the survey is to understand the main issues relating to land and housing policies – if land policies are pro-poor (if they are to help correct the disadvantages that poor people typically suffer in many areas of land policy) – so the conditions that affect policy implementation and modalities can be better understood. In addition, these factors could highlight key areas in which UN-HABITAT could contribute. In short, the analysis of the survey will orientate UN-HABITAT closer to understanding better how to achieve its mission, namely, to ‘provide shelter for all’, while ‘promoting socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities’.
The survey is of stakeholders who define, influence or implement policymaking across the world.
We have great pleasure in inviting all alumni in Indonesia to join us for an exciting dinner event hosted by Erasmus University Rotterdam (EUR). As a networking opportunity and a round-table event, the Diner pensant, or working dinner, promises to be productive.
IHS is affiliated to EUR as the International Institute of Urban Management is part of both the Faculty of Social Sciences and the Erasmus School of Economics.
Please confirm your attendance by 20 October by emailing Ms Petra Meiboom at the Alumni Office: meiboom@...
Essay competition
Shortlist of competition entries To mark the 50th anniversary of IHS, the institute is holding a competition to round up the many compelling essays received from IHS alumni reporting from around the world. The writings outline experiences of and approaches to changes in the housing and urban development arena during the last 50 years or expected in the coming decades.
The jury panel comprises IHS alumni Claudio Acioly (Chief Housing Policy, UN HABITAT), Nick Taralunga (Director, IHS Romania) and Azza Sirry (Director, Urban Training Institute, Cairo, Egypt). A shortlist will be drawn up and the winner announced in mid October. The winning essayist will be awarded a place on an IHS executive course in 2009.

Participating in water events
UNESCO-IHE wouldn’t miss participating
in the two major water events of this summer: EXPO Zaragoza (from June
to September in Spain) and the annual Stockholm Water Week (16-22 August,
Sweden). At EXPO Zaragoza, the Institute was present at the UN pavilion.
UNESCO-IHE also presented its flagship project SWITCH, a project that promotes
sustainable water practices in cities. At the World Water Week in Stockholm,
UNESCO-IHE participated in two sessions, one discussing best practices
in sanitation and another examining capacity building networks as knowledge
sharing platforms for development.

SWITCH PROJECT, the movie
You may have heard a few things about the
SWITCH project by now, the biggest research project the Institute currently
coordinates. The project is developing scientific, technological and socio-economic
solutions that contribute to an effective water management for the City
of the Future. Innovations are being tested in ten cities around the globe
and a recently-made film has documented the progress in three of those
cities.

Successful PhD Promotion
on solid waste bioreactor On July 3rd, 2008 Mr. Roberto Valencia
Vázquez successfully defended his PhD thesis and propositions on "Enhanced
stabilisation of municipal solid waste in bioreactor landfills". The
main objective of the thesis was to achieve a final storage quality (FSQ)
status of waste through laboratory and pilot-scale experiments. The research
focused on the interaction and modification of the factors controlling
the waste stabilisation process in order to have a better understanding
of the physical, chemical and biological processes occurring in a bioreactor
landfill. Professor Huub Gijzen was his supervisor, and Henk Lubberding,
PhD, his co-supervisor.
