UN-HABITAT Global Survey
Participate in UN HABITAT’s Global Survey
As part of a strategy review to assess how best to continue to support its partners and enable them to achieve key objectives, UN-HABITAT is collaborating with IHS to launch a world-wide survey.
The purpose of the survey is to understand the main issues relating to land and housing policies – if land policies are pro-poor (if they are to help correct the disadvantages that poor people typically suffer in many areas of land policy) – so the conditions that affect policy implementation and modalities can be better understood. In addition, these factors could highlight key areas in which UN-HABITAT could contribute. In short, the analysis of the survey will orientate UN-HABITAT closer to understanding better how to achieve its mission, namely, to ‘provide shelter for all’, while ‘promoting socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities’.
The survey is of stakeholders who define, influence or implement policymaking across the world.
We have great pleasure in inviting all alumni in Indonesia to join us for an exciting dinner event hosted by Erasmus University Rotterdam (EUR). As a networking opportunity and a round-table event, the Diner pensant, or working dinner, promises to be productive.
IHS is affiliated to EUR as the International Institute of Urban Management is part of both the Faculty of Social Sciences and the Erasmus School of Economics.
Please confirm your attendance by 20 October by emailing Ms Petra Meiboom at the Alumni Office: meiboom@...
Essay competition
Shortlist of competition entries To mark the 50th anniversary of IHS, the institute is holding a competition to round up the many compelling essays received from IHS alumni reporting from around the world. The writings outline experiences of and approaches to changes in the housing and urban development arena during the last 50 years or expected in the coming decades.
The jury panel comprises IHS alumni Claudio Acioly (Chief Housing Policy, UN HABITAT), Nick Taralunga (Director, IHS Romania) and Azza Sirry (Director, Urban Training Institute, Cairo, Egypt). A shortlist will be drawn up and the winner announced in mid October. The winning essayist will be awarded a place on an IHS executive course in 2009.

SWITCH PROJECT, the movie
You may have heard a few things about the
SWITCH project by now, the biggest research project the Institute currently
coordinates. The project is developing scientific, technological and socio-economic
solutions that contribute to an effective water management for the City
of the Future. Innovations are being tested in ten cities around the globe
and a recently-made film has documented the progress in three of those
cities.

Successful PhD Promotion
on solid waste bioreactor On July 3rd, 2008 Mr. Roberto Valencia
Vázquez successfully defended his PhD thesis and propositions on "Enhanced
stabilisation of municipal solid waste in bioreactor landfills". The
main objective of the thesis was to achieve a final storage quality (FSQ)
status of waste through laboratory and pilot-scale experiments. The research
focused on the interaction and modification of the factors controlling
the waste stabilisation process in order to have a better understanding
of the physical, chemical and biological processes occurring in a bioreactor
landfill. Professor Huub Gijzen was his supervisor, and Henk Lubberding,
PhD, his co-supervisor.

Saludos cordiales,
Marina Irigoyen A.

APEBHO@... [mailto:APEBHO@...] Enviado el: Lunes, 21 de Julio de
2008 09:55 a.m. Para: APEBHO@... Asunto: [APEBHO] Resumen nº 108
Quisiera darles a concocer una inquietud. Yo fui becario en el ISS
apoyar a la persona que quiere estudiar, afirmando que sera posible;

Saludos

Editorial
Our first e-newsletter for alumni
We are proud to launch this first UNESCO-IHE alumni e-newsletter. This
e-newsletter, which will be sent on a regular basis, will help you keep
in touch with the Institute through short news items relevant to alumni,
often linked to longer articles online.
You will receive information on the Institute’s recent activities, research
opportunities, alumni meetings, educational opportunities and news from
alumni in the field. Reactions, suggestions and comments are also welcome;
do not hesitate to contact me by email through alumni@...
Invitation to post news and events
The e-newsletter, as well as the alumni portion of UNESCO-IHE’s website,
provides means by which alumni can share news with each other. If you have
information that you would like to share with others, such as your personal
experiences in the field, best practices, interesting events, newsworthy
items, submit it for publication - either in the next issue of the e-newsletter
or on the alumni website - by emailing to alumni@... with
‘e-news’ in the subject line.
Hoping you enjoy our first edition!

Words of the rector
Great! Simply great! The publication of this first Alumni E-News has long
been a goal of the Institute.
UNESCO-IHE has been built on the concept that we are all part of a family
of scientists, engineers, planners and managers dedicated to improving
the possibilities for societies. The more active the interaction among
professionals is, the greater the chance to increase the impact of our
actions. The Institute’s e-newsletter aims to strengthen the existing
bonds and to enhance opportunities for all.
I would like to remind all involved (authors and readers alike) that a
publication of this nature is only as good as the inputs received. Therefore,
while it is obvious that this is your newsletter, you too have the responsibility
to make it work; to contribute your own articles, and make it become an
important source of information and means of exchange of ideas for all
those who have passed through our halls – whether for a PhD, an MSc or
as an MEng participant.
With this goal in mind and with the tremendous experience represented by
our nearly 14,000 alumni, there is little doubt that this E-outlet will
succeed. I promise to add my own voice to those of our alumni as we put
into practice new technologies to better serve all related to our Institute.
Professor Richard A. Meganck, PhD Rector
152 students of the year 2006|2008 received their Master diploma

Maritza
